hey, im new to all this been reading all post for a while.I now live in sheridan county.I dont have a dog yet!but i mostly hunt alone, just got invited to a group hunt on the opener 10+ people and lots of dogs, should i pass on the group and go at it alone like i have since i started hunting?never hunted with more than 3 and never behind dogs.never had a problem finding birds.mostly on public wiha.any sugestions?thanks

you should ask yourself first, do i know these guys and do i feel comfortable hunting with 10 guys? for me, the answer would be no.....even if i know everyone, 10 guns moving through a field at once, even with 2 or 3 blocking is just too much, then there is likely to be the "dog free-for-all", where there are about 4-5 dogs hunting at once, that can seldom be good for the dogs or anyone else, then again, if you enjoy shopping the "blue light" specials with crazy people running to the table to buy the promo blender, well....you will just have to decide, but eventually, after you get a dog, you will be able to go effectively on your own, anytime you want......good luck and be careful.

thanks for reply hunter94,i have never hunted big groups and never had a problem finding birds just was wondering if the whole group thing was worth it or not im a safe hunter and dont like getting shot lol:) i can not wait for sat to get here nites are getting longer as i write this too many dreams (or nitemares)as the roosters flush and cakle, saw a few kids out today for the youth opener big smiles and heavy bags :D thanks again and have fun this season

Large group hunts really only work if you have a large section of land to spread out on. I've hunted by myself, most often with just a few friends and a dog or two and with groups as large as 35-40 people. The big groups I've been with have walked full sections at a time (usually takes a few passes still) and usually split up 2/3 walking and a 1/3 blocking. i'll have fun either way, but prefer to keep it to 5 or 6 friends or so. the big groups i've been in were for Wounded Warriors or other veterans support type hunts - not something i typically do.
From a safety perspective - the more guns you add the higher the level of risk. Knock on wood - we haven't had any major issues yet. that's likely due to the type of people hunting in those groups (vets and long time shooters). Though there is one of the older gentlemen who peppers a few people while he's blocking - he can't see the walkers coming at him when they are out around the limit of the round he's shooting. ....I wear a lot of blaze!
You'll likely have fun no matter what - but also wouldn't recommend working with bigger groups if you don't know the shooters.
good luck out there.

thanks doubletap.after going thru all things in my mind i am hunting alone on the opener maybe with one or two others i have not hunted with groups so i am just lookin for info on what other peeps think imo i feel that large groups would take most of the fun out of hunting? i have been hunting for three years and never been out with more than 3 and have always had a blast wether we got birds or not, most of the birds i harvested was when i was all alone.hoping to get a pup soon but unfourtionatly i cant have one now in my living situation.thanks again hope ur season is the best

I just want to welcome you to UPH. Drop by often and tell us some hunting updates..........Bob

Welcome to the site first of all. I second what the others said. Basically, if you are comfortable with all the guys and know them pretty well, you should be good. I've only been in a group like that once. Too many people and idk, I just didn't enjoy it. I'm sure it would be different depending on the group of guys as well. I know what you are saying about the pup and living situation. I'm in the same boat.

No i dont know any of them cept one that gave me the invite thats why i will be hunting alone!im sure they are safe hunters and all but i think groups that big would ruin it for me,i love the sereneity and sounds of the earth wen im alone and that rooster makes me jump a foot and half before he falls to the ground mmmhm!
