New Year Quail - Average Weather Conditions

Planning a trip around the NewYear timeframe for NC KS. What could I expect in the way of typical weather that time of the year?

Years back we made a trip down for the final four days of January. Buddy and myself shot 16 quail on the 31st. January weather can be 20 degrees to 70 degrees. If it rains, the secondary roads are impassible. Don’t try it. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Good luck
Land owners are the best. Makes it more fun if the weather cooperates.

Appreciate it. Looking forward to it. Never chased quail before.

Any chance at prairie chickens that time of the year? I believe I will be in the right areas for them.

Never any guarantees at that time of year, but your chances of hitting some good weathers are better there than say Iowa.

Their range and numbers have really shrunken the last decade or two. But if you're in their range, they will be in thinner cover and maybe even in the wide open. We used to cruiz in early morning and evening watching the horizon for them. Then get permission to pass shoot them in a tree line of fence row. An old farmer told me once the flock will fly over the same fence post their whole life.

If I was planning I’d say mid to low 40s highs at least half of your trip. But at that time of year you could see some snow that will lock in some lower temps. Late in Jan you’re as likely to see anything 20s to 60s. But it always seems to warm up end of Jan. before Feb. comes in with some more cold.

It’s a real crap shoot that time of year. Could be quite pleasant, or it could be -10 (I’ve hunted in as cold as -20 air temperature in Kansas).

Good chicken numbers in parts of NC/NW KS, but they’re very hard to get close to this time of year.

Good advice here on the roads and not just rain. Even 1 inch of snow can turn some dirt roads into grease by the afternoon. It snows 1 inch overnight and you're thinking "Great! I can see some tracks in the snow to know If there are birds around!"

You drive to your spot in the morning when the ground is frozen with no issue but by the time you are driving back in the afternoon the temp has climbed into the upper 30's or 40's and that solid dirt road you drove in on is now a slushy muddy mess....been there, done that and learned to stay close to blacktops or maintained roads if there has been any precipitation recently.

A follow up question; anyone know if my wife would need a license to just tag along? She wouldn't be carrying a gun, more just observing and watching the dogs.

If she's not carrying a gun she won't need a license. The only way she could possibly get in trouble is if she is carrying the dead birds in the field with you and you get checked but even that is a maybe.
