Just found this site today, great site, love the habitat section.

I started a restoration project on 900+ acres in South Central SD about six years ago---I knew NOTHING about USDA programs nor did I have any farming experience to work with. With help from the local FSA office, Pheasants Forever and friends have installed about 140 acres of various CRP programs and do about 20 acres of food plots on my own dime each year.

Has it helped? The 1st year we only took 12 roosters (those in hand) and this year about 185, last year (a bad yr with crops in the field all season) only about 100, the year before --201. Yes if you build it they will come.

We hunt with friends and some out of state guys each year, about 30 different people each year and NO WE DO NOT CHARGE TO HUNT.

Hey SDJIM, welcome to the site from a fellow South Dakotan. This is an awesome site and you will enjoy it. Where are you located? And please tell us a little about yourself, guns and dogs. Take care and enjoy!

Living my dream

I'm 62 and enjoying retirement. Finally hung it up after 43 yrs of doing the same old electronics job, mainly for the USAF.

The wife and I live in Custer SD and her family farm is near Platte SD in Charles Mix county.

I love O/U shotguns and have a 12,16, and 410, my favorite being my Ruger Red Label in 12 ga. I don't have a dog as my wife can't live with them so I go with the theory of I have the land and I'll hunt with you and your dog. It seems to work of me LOL

I retired as of 1 Oct last year and spent about 40 days afield hunting Pheasnats a few ducks and geese. I'm living my dream.

Jim,
Sounds like you and I need to get together and do some hunting. I'm 64 and also retired. You've got the land and I've got the dogs. I've got two Brittanys that can't get enough of pheasant hunting. Interesting to see you have a 16 ga. I bought a 16 ga. Citori a couple years ago and added a 16 ga. SxS last year. It's almost all I hunt with any more.

We're some miles apart but maybe we can arrange a hunt next fall. I don't have a problem driving a few hundred miles to hunt for a day or two. That's the nice thing about retirement, time is not an issue and every day is a weekend. :)

Welcome to UPH, I see you are making friends already. Which is great. I'm stunned/in shock you name all your gauges and my favorites are not there. The 20 and 28, great guns I love them.........Bob

Oh I have both a 20 ga and a 28 ga in Rem 870's. Also fun to shoot is my 12 ga double black powder muzzleloader, you think ya can get furtrated stuffn' shells into a double gun when the roosters are flushing--try doing that with a muzzle loader.

Welcome to the group SDJIM. I like the way you think. Build it and they will bring you the dogs.

Welcome SDJim:thumbsup: Don't charge to hunt hot damn I'll be there next year:D Just joking:) Sounds like a great thing you got going enjoy:cheers:

I wish we all could do for the habitat that you are doing. Swamps, fence lines, rock piles, water irrigation ditches, and high ground in fields all used to be habitat. In farm areas that are irrigated , farm field pivots, and land leveling have devistated the HABITAT available for winter carry over for ALL WILDLIFE. Tis a shame for the wildlife, and lovers of wildlife, and wild places.Welcome and i envy you, and your work! May you inspire others!

Jim, I am very jealous!!!!!!!!! Welcome to UPH!!:thumbsup::cheers:
