New to Hunting South Dakota

My son has started school and plays football for the school of mines in Rapid City, we are from kansas and have enjoyed the pheasant hunting down here for along time and have hunted the same farms for years. Now that he is up there at school we would like to get a feel for what the hunting is like west of Chamberlin so maybe we could get a few hunts in. Never hunted up there before so any information would be appreciated, we are hunters that hunt both walk in and private land and treat the land like it should be treated, close gates, drive only were you are supposed to etc. Any info on what parts to hunt that would be close to Rapid City either public or private would be great.Have a nice day.

kchawk, from the population maps it appears that the real strong bird numbers drop off as you move west towards Rapid. I know there are strong numbers near Presho and that is probably about 200 miles east of Rapid. I am not too familiar with prospects west of Presho.

Your boy will probably be able to pick up some better leads at school I reckon.

I have hunted a little around Newell SD, not anywhere close to the number of
birds near Chamberlain, the the counts are getting higher. I met a farmer that
just said I could hunt his harvested corn field but permission should be easier
there than in the higher concentration areas.not much public land that has
pheasants but the grouse should be great.

There are very low numbers out west, which is where I live. You need to travel East, at least 140 miles to Kennebec, Presho, White Lake areas and then you will get into birds. There are birds around here, but VERY few. The closest he could head is Phillip to see some birds, there are more there that RC area, but again it will be allot of pounding the ground and not as much to show for it. He will save frustration and probably gas by just driving out there and even hitting public land. GL. Any other questions he has just ask, I live in Rapid City.
