New to CO needs a little help

Hey everyone the family and I are new to Colorado. We are living on Peterson AFB and working on Ft Carson. I have a 2 year old deutsche drahthaar that has some training. He whoas but is not steady to wing and shot and still has tendency in the beginning of a hunt to want to run, but he is learning and the trainer we were working with said his nose is strong.

Anyway we are trying to get into some grouse hunting. I hit Rampart Range last weekend and found an area that had everything a grouse should want based on what I had read. We were at about 9300 ft, on a south spur, grass going into Aspens, and those nice red berries I guess they like. But alas no bird and the dog didn?t get excited at all.

This weekend we are thinking of heading down to San Isabel and camping at Bear Lake Campground and trying that out. Is that even worth the trip? I am not asking for any secret areas just if anyone would want to point a newly started grouse hunter and his dog in the right direction. Thanks in advance!

I have never been there for Grouse. I have seen some there though. Reports from friends have been mixed for Grand County. Good for Gunnison County. We kept tabs everytime someone was out this Summer and saw birds in Grand County everytime until the opener.. Nothing on the opener but the next day ran into a few. Gunnison county seems to have more birds this year. Good Luck.

Thanks. I am still learning my way around. I work with a couple guys who bow hunt that area and said they?ve seen some birds up in there. Appreciate it!

Howdy! you live where I work ;) Rampart Range has more bigfoots than grouse IMO. I hunt Eagle, Routt, Rio Blanco and Moffat counties if that tells you anything. Birds do exist on the front range, and every one I bag is a trophy! You'll soon learn if you want to get into consistant numbers you gotta drive at least 3+ hours.

Thats kinda what I was figuring. So heading north and west the best idea or south and west. I use hillman.com to do some scouting ahead. if you have any general areas to check that would be helpful. Thanks for all of you help!

Northwest is generally considered the epicenter here in CO. Like Bleu - I've seen a few birds camping down near the Spanish peaks but I've never been there in season.

The Ramparts hold a small population. A (very) few guys know of some, but I live 30 minutes from the north end of RR road and I spend a lot of time messing around down there (not grouse hunting) and have seen a grand total of 6 grouse the last 20 years.

It's an addiction to be sure :) Grouse sausage sliders happening tonight with the handful I've taken this year.

Man that is going to be a drive to get up in that direction. But that is a lot of the fun of hunting, getting out and exploring!!

And since you're new and in the Springs, check out the Pikes Peak chapter of Pheasants Forever to help meet some new like minded outdoorsmen.

Hopefully I can get out this weekend and get some miles in! Might just take the young one out for some dove hunting this weekend though.

Not sure if you are talking dog or son/daughter when you say young one but the Pikes Peak chapter is having a youth event on 2 Oct if you are talking kid.

If not the chapter usually meets the 1st wed of the month at Bass Pro at 630 pm. There is a meeting room behind the bar in the bowling area. Check out the website if you have any questions.
