New Pointing Lab pup

I will be picking up a pointing lab pup and 2 weeks and I am trying to find the correct book/method for training a pointing lab that will be used for both upland and waterfowl. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

check out the american pointing lab association (APLA) website. there is alot of good info there. I also think that there is a book by Julie Knutson that everybody recommends. have fun with the little fella, they are a blast! post some pics when you get him.

Thanks for your help, I just picked up the Julie Knutson book but it is still to early for me to understand her total concept. The pup I am picking up is from Turkey Creek located in SW MN. It is a male out of their Goose x Cheyenne breeding. This will be my first experience with a pointing lab instead of a traditional lab. I am sure I will be back on this site for additional help with training.

You could contact Troy Benson Northstar PLs or HRK pointing labs up there were you are.

I have trained with Julie quite a few times. 1 hour away, If i were not training my own dogs there are probably 3 to 4 trainers that i would trust with them, and Julie would be one of them, She is not a high pressure trainer and gets into the head of the dog.

I would put the pup on birds early just like the pointing dogs get from 10 to 13 weeks. Here is a link what i do with all my dogs http://www.uplandjournal.com/departments/gundogs.html

and here is how they turn out.

I am not endorsing any one program, I was just stating that a lot of people recommend that book. I have found the best book for training in my situation is the check book.:p

I also second that you start this dog like you would a pointing dog. hopefully you already built the pigeon coop.
