Hi everyone. I live on Long Island, NY and am currently looking to extend my hunting in this state. I grew up in Ne and make a yearly trip back to pheasant hunt either Ne or SD with my brother, dad, and two great guys from Illinois. I have enjoyed reading the different threads and look forward to many great discussions re the sport we love. Thanks for allowing me to be a part of it.

Welcome to the site! We've done a little NY pheasant hunting, so feel free to join us in the Pa. Forum.

Welcome Husker, I worked in Tecumseh for a couple of years. Bought my NE lifetime license and have only been back once since leaving in 1996. Good site good people.

Thanks. I have thought about making a trip down to Pa. I hear there's good pheasant hunting down there. Anything to extend my season will make me happy:thumbsup:

We went back to the GI area and north of there late in January and we didn't see a whole lot. It was cold with rough winds but it was good to be back in the home state just hanging out with my dad and brother.

Hey. Im from ny as well. live in hudson valley now. lived in the city for a little before i moved. I have a 2 year old gsp.

I was just up there last week checking out the area to see what the terrain was like. It seemed to be very dense and thick in spots but also some good grassy areas too. Has that been your experience too? How do you like the gsp for the cover we have here in NY? I'm considering a Weim and feel confident I found a breeder with strong lines but not sure if I would be better going with a flusher like a Boykin or a versatile pointer. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hey. So here is my experience for what it's worth.......

The cover is just like you mentioned. Some fields surrounded by woods. Cover is pretty thick early in the season. my dog does not like the thick stuff. He will check it out but will never bust thru it. Sometimes id like him to be a little more aggressive in heavy cover, but he wont go thru. I think thats more a reflection in my personal dog rather than a reflection on the breed. Ive had some points in really thick stuff that neither of us could get in to make a flush. I guess thats where having a lab or flushing dog would benefit. i guess its what u really prefer. I dont feel that the dog cant handle the terrain. Ive seen weims out in he field doing just fine with the cover so i think its a good choice for u. Meep us posted

have you ever hunted the public lands in long island where they stock? i never have but I was curious to how it was. pressure? etc?

I haven't but will this coming fall. I always took it at face value when people told me there were only ducks and deer out there. Recently a guy that grew up hunting in NY told me there were birds out there but I would need a dog. So I started doing research and drove out there a few weeks ago. Sure enough, as I was driving by the hunter's station in Ridge I saw a big rooster walking along a tree line. I got out of my truck and starting walking toward it a little and it ran a few feet over to some brush under a tree. I stopped and waited a few seconds and started again. I took about two steps and it was up and cackling. That sure got my blood bumping. I was excited the rest of the day.

Unfortunately there wasn't anyone in the hunting station to ask about the best spots etc, but I did see an officer later in the day and he told me some places to go. I will definitely want to check it out later when the snow melts and it is above freezing. From what I could see it looked similar to upstate. And it only took about 50 minutes from my house so that's a bonus.
