Need new dog!

Gentlemen,
Here is my predicament. I am almost 67 years old and used to raise Britts previous to 2005 in Arizona. Put my last/best dog down in 2010. I am looking for a small female Britt but I live on soc. sec. which ain't much. I cannot afford the $700 and $800 they want for puppies thesedays. They of course ask more for the females because they think you will be breeding them
in the future. At my age a litter of pups is the last thing I need. I am looking for a good hunting partner (spayed) to last me the rest of my hunting years.
ANY SUGGESTIONS ?

If you're willing to consider a Britt in rescue, there is the American Brittany Rescue and National Brittany Rescue and Adoption Network (NBRAN) organizations. Check their websites. All such dogs come neutered and cost $350.00. I got a young male in '07 and he is a dandy upland dog. I was able to get him into a field and fire some shots before I plunked down the $$.

Thanks BC. I had been warned to stay away from the rescue orgs as I may be buying someone else's problems. I might try them tho with your good report. I know their ownership qualifications can be a little restrictive for a guy living in a 5th wheel. I appreciate the info.

you can easily be buying someone's problem, it happens frequently that these dogs have been abused. but, if you buy a pup it will take time and training, birds, to develop. a started dog that someone could part with, for a reasonable price, would be perfect.......good luck.

Was in much the same situation, myself.

Browsed the American Brittany Rescue site a lot, and for a long time.

Went through the application and home visit routine.

Found one that might do.

Took him home.

:)
He's a field-bred Springer.

We're doing fine so far. Look up posts with "Mick, the new, used, dog" on the forum, may help.

You don't HAVE to adopt one, but be nice to be qualified to do so if one shows up that tickles your fancy.

Good hunting.

greyghost- I bred my male to a good female- 3 females and 2 males- they are just about three weeks old- believe they're all spoken for- but if you'd like I could put you down in case a female isn't taken- they're asking $350.00 and pick up at 7-8 weeks- not to far from you actually

Thanks Shadow.
How far are you from me?

breeder just called me- asked if I knew anyone interested- said maybe
quite a drive for you- SW Kansas- price is good though- could hold one for a bit and then you could get out and hunt with me :)

if you'd like the pedigree and pictures- we can do that

Thanks for helping a dog in rescue, a dog in need. My dog, Gus the Orphan Dog, came out of Nat'l Brittany Rescue and Adoption Newtwork (NBRAN). He is a DANDY upland dog and all round companion.

will confirm on the price and avalibility- will take pictures of the pups and send them-

on this farm- everything works out ok- you get to shoot over the father and mother- hang in there

OK Shadow, thanks. Right now my wife is bad-mouthing the entire project so I'll have to see where this goes. We live in a 5th wheel so no room to carry birds around to train
a pup and she's mubling about how are we going to go accross country next summer with two dogs. I don't see a problem myself but she seems to. I've often thought about just teaching the basic commands and just letting the dog do what it does naturally and maybe let it learn from an experienced dog. Who knows. Thanks,
Ghost

hey greyghost,I had a gsp that was trained when I was a teenager(she was a rescue) and she helped me train a pup on birds. The pup was a mix that I had trained basic commands and the gsp helped in pointing and tracking when I took them hunting with my dad.

just called- they decided on $500.00 a pup- I'm a bit dissapointed
I'd say basic commands and into birds young is wise with these

Iwas looking at the brittany rescue and there are 4 in colorado in need of a home. There are 2 males and 2 females. Two of them are brother and sister. They look about 1yr. old in age.The other two look a little older but not much. Just thought I'd let you know.

why are you peaple harping and hammering on this guy about a rescue maybe he doesn't want a rescue dog becouse he doesn't want to take the chance of someone elses bad luck
