NC Kansas Report

Just wanted to report on my hunt last weekend. To sum it all up I was really disapointed with the pheasant numbers. I never stepped foot in public, I only hunted private land. Me and two other guys only shot 4 pheasants in a whole day of hunting and a half day. We hunted prime habitat with a big crp field next to three bordering CUT fields of corn. We covered the whole field both days and maybe saw 6 birds at most. I was REALLY shocked. We waited past sunset to see if the birds still hadn't come out of the cut corn and they didn't. Don't know where the birds are, if there are even birds there! That field was south of Cawker City. We also had another spot near smith center. This was a huge thick crp field next to another CUT corn field. Saw a few in the distance but it was real disapointing. We had some real good hunting dogs as well. We were starting to get real frustrated with the pheasants and gave up on them. We focused on quail and hunted a draws for the next four hours. We kicked up four covey's and all had about 10 birds in them. We harvested seven and had some real good dog work. I was real confused on why the pheasants are WAY down in the area but the quail are WAY up? Anybody else experience hunts like this in North Central Kansas?

i was west of ft riley 2nd weekend and focused on quail based on the crops not harvested and warmer weather. saw 2 roosters in day and half and kicked up about 75 quail.

kdwp got the quail forecast right but little off on pheasant.

I agree about hunting CRP, I hate it as well......:D A few weeks ago when we went hunting we saw more birds running into milo than anything. Unfortunately for me my farmer buddy planted everything that he owned in beans....:( The fields that he custom farms looked very good though...:D

Thanks for the North Central report. Last time in the NE/NC region, I saw more whitetails than pheasants.

Sounds like we weren't the only ones baffled. Hunted around mankato weekend after thanksgiving and was very disappointed in numbers of birds. Hunted milo, crp. wheat stubble, cut corn field edges. 6 birds between 4 in 2 and one half days. Sad

After my two kansas hunts this year I am all against the KDWP upland bird forecast. The only way I'm going to know if birds are there is to get out and hunt. WOW thats a great quail report SOUTHERNBLUES. I also have heard good reports in that area. Were you hunting private land?

KSlabman, I agree with you. Those folks up there at KDWP are pretty good at PR and get everyone worked up about big numbers. I suppose I would do the same thing if I were there, who knows? I have only run into good numbers in two spots and many of the fields I normally hunt are actually down in numbers. I will be out starting Thursday chasing roosters again.

Next to one of the WIHA (which had NO birds) we saw someone cutting milo. Waited til he dumped at the road and asked to hunt what he cut. 20 mins later kicked up covey probably around 15-20 birds. Milford had a few coveys (big) and another WIHA west of Milford. We kicked up 5 coveys in day and half (hunted sun up to sundown).

Also hunted west of Iola in Allen County (private) and got into quail...Fall River (public) too.

Wow thats terrific getting into numbers like that on walk in. Nicely done! A few years ago I hunted tuttle creek and kicked up four (10 bird) covies. I thought that was terrific until I started getting into 20 bird covies in SC kansas. Kansas can sure hold some good quail hunting, thats fur sure.
