Just wanted to report on my hunt last weekend. To sum it all up I was really disapointed with the pheasant numbers. I never stepped foot in public, I only hunted private land. Me and two other guys only shot 4 pheasants in a whole day of hunting and a half day. We hunted prime habitat with a big crp field next to three bordering CUT fields of corn. We covered the whole field both days and maybe saw 6 birds at most. I was REALLY shocked. We waited past sunset to see if the birds still hadn't come out of the cut corn and they didn't. Don't know where the birds are, if there are even birds there! That field was south of Cawker City. We also had another spot near smith center. This was a huge thick crp field next to another CUT corn field. Saw a few in the distance but it was real disapointing. We had some real good hunting dogs as well. We were starting to get real frustrated with the pheasants and gave up on them. We focused on quail and hunted a draws for the next four hours. We kicked up four covey's and all had about 10 birds in them. We harvested seven and had some real good dog work. I was real confused on why the pheasants are WAY down in the area but the quail are WAY up? Anybody else experience hunts like this in North Central Kansas?
