Narrowing it down

Wow, sneaking up on us now is our hunt Nov 16th-22nd. After printing out the WIHA maps in NW 1-3,7-9, and 13-15 it's painfully obvious were looking @ too big an area. Flying into Den, don't what to drive too much more than necessary but don't want to skimp either if another 60-100 miles makes the diff. Won't be there opening weekend and will be hunting 3 guys w/o dogs.
Most have said just look for WIHA with good cover next to crops. Good advice for sure. Lots of towns with plenty of WIHA between them. If this was your pickle... how would you draw your lines(cities).
Good luck to all opening weekend. And thanks to everyone here. Been lurking for awhile and it's obvious there's a bunch of great guys!
Be safe and shoot straight

I'll probably be the only guy around that week with a Boise st. Hat on!

Maverick go to the upland bird report on the Kansas dept of conservation we site they lay out the county's in the northwest part of the state that have the best numbers. The biologist who wrote the report says what county's boarder the projected hot spots, infact he said that the numbers there seeing in the NW part of the state are the highest since 1982. You can print a county map off the internet. Hope this helps

Judging by your info your saying stick to atlas maps 1-3. or 1,2,7,8. sure looks like a lot of WIHA in eastern 2 and 8.
thanks in advance

According to the reports, the NW will be great this year.

Find a hunter-friendly motel in a town you like (started writing dog-friendly but erased) near lots of wiha. You won't be disappointed.

Best of luck to you.

Yea what I'm saying is they is so much good WIHA in Kansas that it won't be a problem for you to find birds. Don't worry any place you go in western Kansas will have good hunting as long as they is crops and cover (CRP). Have a good hunt let us know how you did when you get back.

Your going pheasant hunting for a week without dogs. Wow!!! You must know something that I don't.

Good Luck

I think you should be able to do fine hunting anywhere out west even without dogs. My group has been goin out without dogs for a few years now and we still get our chance to take birds, you just have to be willing to work a little harder than the groups with birds! Where ever you end up, good luck and let us know how you guys did!

Mav...

Even if I was coming from Denver, I would come at least as far as Trego (Wakeeney), Graham County (Hill City) area. NW Kansas (Colo border to maybe Hoxie area) had a bad drought a couple of years ago and birds are coming back but aren't at old levels yet (my opinion). Graham-Rooks border area is awful birdy and lots of Public/WIHA.

I spoke to a KDWP biologists who helps compile the upland forecast each year. He told me that he thought this area was the hottest area in KS this year. I will make it up there this year, but it won't be on the opener, though there is plenty of WIHA to go around in the area. For the youth hunt last year, we hunted on the E border of Rooks county and saw good #s of quail. Good luck! 9 days........

Thanks, guys

Coming to your great state for the first time it's just really hard to prepare and know what to expect. We'll be legal, safe, and respectful...And won't run around next year bragging on the WWW or acting like "instant experts"...
Believe me there's plenty of that going on in the Fly Fishing world!

My dogs 15. I get him out occasional here but mostly on my fishing trips. Waterfowling season is too cold for him and there aren't enough wild birds(pheasants) left in my state to warrant the walk for him.

This will be lots of fun.... learning over again w/o the help of dogs. When I have the time to do it right.... I'll train another animal. I've been blessed with 2 great ones so for.

As someone mentioned in another post it's the people that often make place great. Seems Ks like Id has alotta great folks. Thanks
