I picked mine up @ the FWP office but they still hadn't got the open fields books yet. Anybody get that one yet?

I got my UGBEP book yesterday here in NY but not my Block Management guide. What is the open fields book , should I be looking for one of those.

Still waiting on my info. Hopefully today! Been on the website nightly for a couple of weeks and am having a hard time wrapping my arms around this for some reason. Will be posting a lot of questions with obvious answers in the near future..:)

The open fields program was new last year. It is basically small parcels open strictly for bird hunters. Unless there were new sites added, they were primarily located in eastern mt.

A reminder, Montana, and the west is being settled by people who are city folks ready to live in god's country. In many cases they haven't equated hunting in the balance. All Montana landowners are acutely "aware" of the property line boundry's. If you stray, off of public land, blm, open fields, you may have nasty surprise, and a big fine. It was not to long ago, in Montana and Wyoming hunters were welcome across the kitchen table, the wonder was, you trekked all the way out there to hunt birds! Got a perspective of somebody who lived in a different part of the country. Now everybody has internet, cable, they either already know, or don't want too! I miss the old days.

I have found the people and landowners to be very nice and helpful. I just got off the phone with a landowner whose land I hunted on and he called to tell me he sold the land but was arranging for me to hunt with the new owners permission. I have not had a bad interaction and I hope I never do. I think we all have to remind everyone and each other that it is the good graces of the landowners that allow us the great hunting we find here. Treat them and their property with respect always.

Only a few days till the season starts.

Oldandnew, You are pretty much right on. In the Western part of MT the Large Carnivores are controlling big game populations. Cow/calf elk and General deer permits are a thing of the past, Yes Sir even antler permits are a lottery hard draw.
Proof, check out that the big game combos do NOT sell out. Really not that long ago arguably, the best all around license in the lower 48's was the MT Big Game Combination License.
Holly Crap:eek: State Wide:thumbsup: Archery, If not successful You could go with the Rifle. Heck You could hunt mid Sept through the weekend after Thanks Giving with the same Combo license.

BUT, :( whatever:confused: the sign of the times. So many, MT human transplants?

Tourists and All those visiting the NP's, National Forests, Federal and State Land, State Parks.

Would so much rather see one of the large carnivores then a Big Game Critter any day. YOU THINK!

Good Bad?
I'm just glad I have a place/places.
And Glad for You guys that have connections.

I was not aware of the big game problems out in the western area. I guess I have found my own little place hunting the birds many seem to overlook. I don't hunt pheasants due to the crowds and time of year. I guess its like anything else when to many people find out about a good thing that thing changes.
