I just spent the weekend in North Central ND. Visiting with a lot of land owners and back roading 300+ miles all day Sunday, checking out at least 20 public areas, walking, observing habitat conditions.
We stayed mostly in better bird areas, paralleling creeks and rivers, RR right of ways, prairie potholes and low lands, stuff like that.
Good farming country is just that, good farming and they farm all of it, not much left for CRP, or the birds.
Potholes for the most part are in good shape, most have a good grassy, brushy, woodsy buffer. Perfect for the waterfowl, every pond has ducks, lots of them.
Where ever you come across grassy, brushy, and trees there are pheasants, undisturbed stuff. Not grazed, not cut, and not burned. ND is doing VERY good with the pheasant cover they have.
It shows, pheasant for the most part hatched early, broods are half grown.
Everybody that has pheasant cover agrees, numbers are up from last year.
