Minnesota Pheasant Hunt

My father, uncle, and I are planning a trip to Minnesota to hunt pheasants and were wondering if there are some areas that we should avoid in the fall due to the weather of earlier this year? How are things looking out there so far?

If it were me planning a trip somewhere out east, I wouldn't have Mn as my fist choice. Things are down here and after this past season, they are going to be even more dire than before.

Many States will offer better Pheasant hunting then Minn, most States will by a long shot. However, if you insist, I would stick to areas near the southern border.

From what I have seen we are in for a great bounce back. Chicks are plentiful, and nesting has been great. West central MN should be good. South may be tough. I would get a couple hrs west of the metro and north of Hwy US 12 at least. Wilmar north, Appleton areas should be good. A while ago I was thinking the worst but things don't seem too grim anymore. I am from the south and seen what happened to the birds down there this winter. They got hit way harder then we did in Wst central MN. MN has had some awesome pheasant hunting to offer for quite a few years now. I have seen flushes from 10- 50-100 birds most each time out for a number of years, thats plenty to shoot at.

Not that you can't have a good hunt in Minnesota. But since you are traveling a long distance and probably going to end up in western Minnesota why not consider driving a little further and hunting South Dakota? Or do both!

Thanks for the info everyone. The reason we are choosing Minnesota is because this will be more of a combo type of hunt (Pheasant/Scouting Deer for next year). I believe you can pheasant hunt during the deer season. Everything we have ever read or seen about Minnesota leads us to believe that it provides more of our "type" of hunting. Is there a good amount of public land in West Central Minnesota? Does anyone know of a good place to stay out there? We were thinking about renting a cabin or house if any are available? Thanks again!

Thanks for info. We were considering going the week of the deer opener, just to see where the pressure was, but you bring up a good point about the extra people out an about. We are not looking for a guided hunt but just some old fashioned pheasant hunting!

Bird hunting during deer season is not so bad. Just hit public areas that don't have a vehicle. Once your out west people will leave you alone if you are in there. If your close to the metro areas forget about Northern hospitality. Hit some doors in the rural areas that you see some sign or birds, or that look good and do some asking for some private spots. It will suprise you how many will help you out. There is a ton of public ground that offers good bird and deer hunting. As TMR said in a little while we will know more. Gettin permission for deer hunting is tougher as most farmers will step out them selves for that. But there is some that will say yes. I would say 1 in every 50 you ask for deer. And less chance closer toward season.
