We went out 2nd weekend. As the crops came down we saw more and more birds. Some were young rooster, but there were some big birds. I would say only slightly more young roosters than normal. We probably saw more birds this year than we did last year. They were holding incredibly tight. It was great practice for the 2 year old pointer we had with us. Even my Jack Russell was chasing them like crazy through the cattails. With some poor shooting, we were able to get about half our limit each day. With only 4 guys and 1.5 dogs that was an OK day. We had plenty to shoot at and rarely walked a slew or field without kicking up something. We killed several that were very hard to find. The dogs just would not find them once they were down. We thought it was just our two, but everybody we talked to said the same thing. We even had one missing a leg and shot through the wing in a small patch of grass between the road and a field. 4 dog walked around without so much a catching a whiff. We say were it crawled under and eventually spotted it, but the dogs were no help.
Enjoy the hunting, and if enough people stay home, there should be plenty of birds to breed this year. The Father-in-law drives Schwan's truck around Redfield and he says he sees more birds the later the season goes. It probably is due the the crops finally coming out.
