Hmmm....70 degres in Lake Andes on Jan. 5th. 1 degree short of the record.

Set a record here in Mpls of 52 degrees a few days ago for a high.

I would say the pheasants and all wildlife are getting a big break this winter across the upper midwest.

On top of that it is very dry which has farmers concerned but pheasants prefer it dry.

The 14 day outlook contines to look mild. Birds should be putting on some weight don't you think. Get those hens coming into spring nice and fat:10sign:

too much of anything is never good......too much snow, too much rain, too dry.....hope SD doesn't get hit by a drought like Kansas did last year, that would not be good for wildlife, anymore than too much snow and cold.....we need the goldielocks scenario......

trouble is South Dakota seems to be the land of Too Much. The land of extremes.

Could use a little snow say about 4 inches so I can complete my midterm maintance on CRP, I've got to burn 3 very lage haystacks and they are near town and the airport so I will need snow and just the right wind--its gonna be hard to find the right combo.:D

Just talked to my good friend today from Armour. His nephew deer hunts out by my east farm and their muzzleloader season ended today. I guess the kid shot 3 does in one day. Said he saw 60 deer down by west end of my shelterbelt.

Hmmmm. normally the snow is so deep by now there are no deer on the property. with all the corn that blew off the cob at harvest there is plenty of food for em on the ground. Glad i went thru the shelterbelt in Dec. and hinge cut 200-300 trees. Should provide so good browse as well.

If winter keeps on likes this should be an amazing carryover of wildlike all over the upper midwest.

This winter was badly needed for many areas. Let's hope and pray we don't get a down pouring rain followed by sub-zero temp!

If this spring doesn't hit us with flooding rains, (here in N. IL) I think we'll return to seeing first year birds next fall. Something I haven't see the past two seasons.:(

I was looking at the snow analysis charts for the nation and it looks like the heavy snow depths are off to the NE of MN in Canada. North and East of Toronto. Seriously deep snow like mountain top deth/ski area depth snow. Not sure if that is normal for that area or not?

How has the winter been so far in SD? Southeastern Wisconsin has been extremely mild, with very little snow. Hope it's similar to the West!

I just came back from Leola and then down by Platte. no snow at all.

Saw quite a few birds in Leola area and also on our farm north of Lake Andes. Very encouraged on the brood stock around the farm. Plenty of thermal cover and easy access to food.

When all the potholes dry up there will be a significant increase in nesting and hunting cover.

We just need to clear the basketball tourny blizzards and we will be smooth sailing to nesting season.
