mid January quail/pheasant hunt to north central Ks. ( staying in Lucas ). Bringing 3 Brittany's and a Lab.

This will be our first trip to Ks. , any info or advise would be much appreciated...
Question, a
Hard to argue against experience ! In Va. we just don't have the "abusive" cover. So far in my 20 yrs or so barbed wire and small sticks ( had to pull a forked stick out of Remi's chest a few weeks ago) she's a hard charger, are the big villains. Bought a chest protector and may get the boots ( insurance ) but certainly would rather not use them (boots). Appreciate the info , anything else you can pass along will be much appreciated too !
I just set up my Isportsman account , can someone pls walk me through the process ? Is it used only on walk in properties ? State owned ? Is there a "limit" on the # of hunters allowed to "register" to hunt a particular property?

Not every walkin is Isportsman. Mainly N.E. Most I sportsman is state wetlands. McPherson, Texas lake, isabel

Not much walkin is I sportsman. The few I know of are in the N.E. The rest of the state it is mostly state owned wetlands. Steel shot only. McPherson. Texas lake, Jamestown as examples. There may be? limits on hunter numbers on the I sportsman walkin properties. The rest of it wildlife areas and general walkin , none that I know of. You check in before and after you hunt. A couple of the properties I've been on I have iffy internet service. If that happens you can phone it in.

You don't need it for the WIHA properties. Just get out and start huntin. I believe you need it for Ft. Riley.

We'll be there mid January also. Seven guys and 11 dogs. Chaos! We boot our dogs in one spot we hunt. Full of sand burrs and guess where the quail hide?

Another question, doing some prehunt homework. I've been talking with friends who've had mostly unpleasant experiences with CRP grass. We are hunting from a "base camp" in Lucas with a plan to scout in all directions and hunt accordingly. Are we likely to find cover other than CRP. FYI , we plan to hunt both pheasants and quail. I'm very much aware of the totally different cover the two require. Also , using the ONX hunt app , any recommendations ?

Not sure what sort of unpleasant experiences your friends have had. I seek out CRP grass to hunt. Lucas is a little different and may have other kinds of productive cover, but the parts of the state I hunt have little other cover available. The pastures are grazed too heavy for pheasants (although there can be quail); the wheat stubble is too short and sprayed with roundup too thoroughly; even the milo stubble seems to be pretty short these days.

Tough walking? always a little, sometimes a lot.

No birds? Sometimes, but I find a lot more pheasants in CRP than in other kinds of cover.

Crowded? WIHA areas can be, especially early in the season. Mid January you won't have any trouble finding one that you don't have to share.

Tough to find downed birds (especially quail)? Yes, but good dogs help a lot.

Hayed or grazed? Occasionally. I'm not an expert, but I think some contracts allow it on a reduced basis. Other times when there's a drought the authorities allow "emergency" haying or grazing.

May have something to do with the early season time frame , the concerns come from people who have been towards the beginning of hunting season, possibility ? According to them thier dogs could scarcely get through the cover ( GSP's ). I would think the January time frame would help with that ... ??

Have to agree with Kansan, it's the good stuff, for sure. My 40# Britt. never was unable to get through it. You might not see him in it, but I can keep tabs on him with Astro.

well now that Kansas and SD have issues, i will hope Iowa remains sensible.
latest rumor is government can now track your movements by cell phone and Bluetooth function.
just a rumor, i have nothing to back it up.....but good way for them to follow your movements and compliance with restrictions?
we are loosing our freedoms folks?? Turn off your Bluetooth function.
I'm a IT Security Specialist and I don't know where you get this stuff but Bluetooth range can be measured in tens of feet. If someone was monitoring you via Bluetooth, you'd be able to see them.

The government can and does track everything about you but that's at the highest level (NSA) and most law enforcement does not have access to that especially at the local level. Heck even the FBI does not have access to that. There's just not enough manpower for them to be able to monitor the actions of every citizen. It's all stored in a database and that's where it will stay unless you come across their radar for some reason.

While I don't agree with the person who says "if your not doing anything wrong you have nothing to worry about" we have sacrificed all of our privacy for the sake of convenience. I still believe Big Tech and our government are out of control to some degree.

I didn't say anything along those lines. We have given up way too much in terms of privacy and everyone should be concerned. I'm not sure what you mean by "Big Tech" though. I'm assuming you're referring to the big data collection players (Facebook, etc). The sad reality is that privacy laws are far behind the times and the damage is irreversible.

Didn't mean to imply you said it , it was a in general comment ( never a good idea ) anyway done with that. Guess I might have to invest in a tracking collar ( never used anything more than a bell )
