Metal Refinishing & Reblueing

Has anyone refinished the metal on an older (50's) shotgun? I didn't care well enough for my grandpa's Marlin Goose Gun and it has some pretty significant surface rust. The rust will come off, but taking it off is going to ruin the metal color/finish.
What products or processes have y'all used? What worked or didn't work?

Try bronze wool and oil first. You might be surprised.

Thanks McFarmer! I've already hit the worst spot with red scotch bright, but maybe it was just shiny and the bluing is still good. I'll give it a shot. I'm already planning to refinish the wood and restore this since it's a family gun.

Then you’ve probably already gone through the blueing.
