Me and the Pups 1st SD Hunt! (Advice welcomed)

Hello Everyone,

I'll be heading up to SD next week to get my pup into some pheasants since there's a lack of them here in KS and from what I've gathered Pierre seems to be a good choice or maybe there's another city I'm overlooking. But wanted to confirm that with anyone who is willing. All my hunting will be public lands (budget) but in desperate moments that I decide to hunt private how much can I expect to pay?

Any other advice is welcomed like will I need tire chains and what not to do if asking for permission to hunt a landowner's property?

Thanks in advance,
KVT

pierre is about as good any where. I've seen good numbers between there and Miller. trespass fees for GOOD private land runs $150 on up. I live here and I have been paying to get on private land just because the public is so pitifull. if you want some numbers let me know.

hey kvt when are you heading up. I also am heading up next week from eastern kansas. Are you hunting by yourself? We are hunting 1-2 days around Pierre, than going up for 2 days around Aberdeen. Weather will be great for December. Two years ago we hunted in temperatures of -20, last year it was a blizzard. I have 5 in my party now, if you want to hunt a day or so just let me know.

Was wondering- how old is youir "pup?" It sounded like you have a very young dog without much exposure to birds...

That's all about to change!

Still lots of birds South Central but they are incredibly wild. My daily bag has gone from a surefire limit 10 days ago, to you better not miss when you get a chance. It's all good dog work though. Flushing hens still provides good training for a young dog.

FeasantFever – Any numbers you’d like to share I’d be more then happy to have.

Jonny – My pup just turned 1 last month and yes you are correct about the bird exposure which is why I’m scrambling to make up for lost time. It’s his first year hunting and my main mission is to get him to not bump birds. I took him to a preserve right before the season started and the first two birds he pointed perfectly then the next three birds he discovered he could get closer and closer until he was on top of the 3rd one. Then he caught the next three. So far this season he’s bumped 12 pheasants and pointed 2. Which is why I need him to have more wild birds encounters to hopefully fix him of bird bumping.

Carp – It will be just me and my pup and would enjoy the company but with my dog being the way he is at the moment I’ll spare you guys the frustration. But thanks for the invite.

By the end of this trip he will be polished pointer :D

I have a 14 month-old Golden Ret. and worked extensively on finding birds and the flush. He's very intense and loves to hunt.

I started teaching him to point, using a training dummy in the garage with a rope. Pulling on the rope as he walks to the dummy and telling him to stay when he's about 2' from the dummy.

He's fun to watch and sometimes sits down when he points! Not too stylish, but it works. On live birds he points, but on a runner, he wants to chase, and that's an ongoing problem!

Good luck on your hunt...remember a 12 month old dog just doesn't get it right away!

Jon
