MDC commitment to upland gamebirds

I had posted a note in reference to the Ruffed Grouse project sponsored by the Missouri Ruffed Grouse chapter, and difficulties with the parent RGS. As I read the letter again, my focus became more upon the fact that the MDC with it's $200,000,000.00 budget annually, dwarfing all states around us, is so lacking in commitment to restoration of ruffed grouse, a native Missouri bird, that they will only make a restocking attempt, if the private, not for profit Missouri grouse society guys, pony up $25,000.00 to pay for it! It gives you pause to imagine how strong MDC's commitment to quail and pheasant recovery is? Meanwhile, has anyone seen a ruffed grouse in Missouri? Anyone actually harvest one, years past, before the season was cancelled this year? let us know about it!

i posted this on gundog forum once i dont think i saw a grouse but i was working in nevada mo and looked up and a flock of prarie chickens come sailing in im guessing thats what they were i didnt know mo had them man those are few and far between even but i realize old and new you were asking about grouse i dont think ive ever seen a grouse where is a high pecentage spot ? where do people see them the most at?missouri used to be all i ever hunted.

MDC is worthless in my opinion and the state has so much damn fescue i am surprised there are any birds left.

Ruffed Grouse are limited to areas of Warren, Calloway, Boone, in east central Mo., Adair, Putnam, and surrounding counties in the NE corner, and Shannon, Iron, and a few surrounding counties in the Ozarks. My cousins lived in Liberal,Mo. until the late eighties, the area around there was prairie chicken central, it was nothing to see hundreds a day. Quail hunting was spectacular as well, I could have shot dozens of prairie chickens over a point. alas not legal. Liberal is about 30 miles southwest of Nevada, due westand a little north of Lamar about 20miles. Unbelievable at dawn to see hundreds of chickens flying in circles higher and higher over the hiway back and forth stretching their wings.

Nope never seen a Ruffed Grouse here in MO. I know a Forestry Biologist and he says he says a few every year!

I killed 2 one year back in about 1989 or 1990 on public land, at the time managed for grouse.
