Marion

Long time viewer of the forum and I have learned a lot from all you "veterans". I have the opportunity to hunt around Marion and was just curious if any of you know much about the pheasant and quail numbers in this area?? The landowner is not a hunter but tells me the farm has good numbers of quail and fair pheasant. Seems to far east for pheasant but what do you guys think? Thanks

I would expect that you find pretty good quail numbers on private ground in that area. It is not really in the great pheasant part of the state. But if the cover is good you will have enough pheasants to make it fun,

Let's put it this way. I would dive down and hunt it with you sight unseen. :D

GREAT ANSWER:10sign:

I would not hesitate to hunt the area. A quail hunt with the chance of occasional roosters is the best hunting KS has to offer IMO...nothing like waiting for the dogs to find the next covey, only to have a rooster bust:cheers:

last time I I hunted around there, a long long time ago, saw a few chickens too. Last year? on here someone got into quite a few pheasants around herringington. you'll never know unless you hunt it. I'd do it!

As the Nike ads said, "Just do it." The farmer says there are birds, so there are birds.

Go for it - a lot of the area is locked up for deer hunting so I dont think it gets much pressure.

He's right - not a hot spot for pheasants but depending on the direction he is located from town and of course the terrain there could be some decent pockets of them.

If he has some wide open treeless pastures could find some prairie chickens as someone else stated. Just stick to the hilltops and look for the stragglers.

If the farmer says there are birds then there are birds. Nobody knows more of whats around than the local farmer(s).

Thanks to everyone for their responses. Setter, if we have more than I can handle I might look you up for late season. Getting close to retirement and will need some fellow kansas hunters to share the fields with in the future.

I'm thinking the guy who lives on the land and farms it knows a hell of a lot more about it than any of us knuckle heads.

My brother deer hunts there and even last year while sitting in the blind saw 0 deer and 8 roosters during that bitter cold snap. He tells me there are quail there as well, but the landowner does not allow pheasant and quail hunting. Go and knock them dead!!!

Im grew up in Peabody...about 11 miles from Marion and used to hunt that entire county extensively. The pheasant hunting in Marion and Harvey county used to be some of the best in the state in the late 80s/early 90s. Unfortunatly its nowhere near what it used to be but thats true for just about everywhere I guess.

I hunted around the reservoir area a little last year and it was pretty dismal. I think I ran into 2 covey of quail and saw a single pheasant in 2 half days of hunting. But it was warm and windy and not good weather for upland hunting.
It looks like numbers have increased this year so you should have a much better chance of getting into some birds than I did.

That farmer gets a "birds eye" view from sitting in that combine or tractor all day. I remember cuttin wheat and milo and you could always see the pheasants running the crop rows ahead of the combine. If he says hes seen em in there Id be excited. Hopefully its cold so they dont run circles on you.

I was actually putting some feeler texts to some friends in that area just a while ago when I saw your post! Small world....I hope you do good!

Would love to.

About 3 years ago it had snowed 3 inches overnight and I had the itch to get out. I had called several buddies the night before and none could join so I grabbed the dog before sunup and headed over there. Had never been there and it's within an hour of home so gave it a shot. Drove just past the dam, found a nice spot to park and got after it. It was just about the coldest morning I can ever remember being out hunting. But....one of those pristine morning were the only sounds when you stop walking is the sound of your breath....and it just seemed to hang in the air. Ya'll know the mornings I am talking about after it snows... But man it was bitter.....anyway I walked the edge of a field, turned up a fence row splitting two milo fields, dog goes on point. Long story short by the end of the fence row two roosters were in the bag with one more that should have been. I remember being so tickled I had to stop at the end and take pictures to send to my buddies who were warm and cozy in their beds. : ) I'd never tell them this but it was one of those "nice to be alone....just my dog and me" kinda mornings.

Went same spot the following year, parked in the same spot and didn't see any vehicles and after about 200 yards out into a field realized I was in the crossfire of about 4 deer hunters in blaze edging the field. That was the end of that trip.
Good luck if'n ya go!
