A long time friend has a 1,200 acre hay operation outside Lewistown and he has invited my son and I out next fall to hunt pheasants. The hunt would be on his private ground and that of other ranchers he knows in the area. He is not a bird hunter, but says if we come there will be birds. Anyone hunt that area in the fall of '24? It's a 1400 mile one-way drive from where we live, so it would be good to see some birds when we get there. Has that area had major storms so far this winter? Any information would be appreciated. Our costs, one we arrive, would be minimal.

Yeah Lewistown area has pheasants. Some people are charging money around there. Thumbs down

There are pockets that have lots of birds, riparian areas and edge habitats. There is some wasteland habitat, section sized dry land farm flats too! This has been a snowy January, but December was open….. the birds generally overwinter well as there are a fair sprinkling of cattle ranchers laying out feed. Me says “ go west young man”!!!! Getting on private ranch’s via his relationships will open the doors to some good memories!

I would hunt North and East.

Thanks everyone for your replies; I'll probably be checking with you after the hatch to see how the remainder of the winter goes. My contact tells me we can hunt his ranch and he stated he rarely lets others hunt it. He'll also introduce me to other local ranchers he know. I've always wanted to hunt birds in MT. and another such low-cost opportunity may be a long time coming.
