Let's try another angle

An old lady calls you and she tells you about her husband who just passed away. She says that he was a great conservationist and really enjoyed hunting pheasants. They have 300 acres. She goes on to say that about half of it is in CRP and there are some wildlife trees, a couple of sloughs with cattails and a creek bottom. She goes on to tell you how much her husband enjoyed hunting on his land and that he harvested over a 100 pheasants per year and usually got a nice deer every year.

You are wondering why she called you, but then she says that all of her kids live far away and aren't interested in hunting. She says that she heard about you from a friend and know that you love to hunt and enjoy the land. To your amazement she says that you can hunt the land this fall anyway you choose, with no restrictions at all. In the spring however, she plans to sell the property so the offer is just for this one time.

You are stunned when she adds that there are two enclosed elevated deer stands on the property. She thinks they may be heated too.

So what would you do? Please think about this seriously and be honest in your answer. Would you:

1. Post the land with no hunting signs and hunt it yourself.
2. Post the land and invite a few friends and relatives to hunt with you.
3. Allow anyone to hunt who asks for permission
4. Put a sign up in town saying that if anyone wants a place to hunt to call you.
5. Enroll it in the Walk-in program and use the money to buy a new gun.
6. Put a sign up saying this land is open for Public hunting.
7. Propose marriage

Keep in mind that in this situation you have no investment in either time or money and its only for one year.

How about let's not.

#7 is the only viable option you've presented. :p

For the rest, you are only a guest in this situation and do not have the right to choose yourself whether to post the land, bring friends, or open it up to more people. ;)

Ditto what 1GB said...

As you've presented it, you're a guest of the property owner and therefor have no ownership rights to post the land in any way or invite others to hunt it without the expressed written permission of the NFL and/or the property owner. Hey FC, if LM's widow makes you an offer you can't refuse, can I come too? :D

For clarification, the lady gave you all of the hunting rights for the year and she does not care what you do. She'll be in Arizona after September and won't be back until the sale in March.

In this example you do not have any time or money invested and there isn't any future considerations either. Its just for this year.

I think we all recognize that generally less hunting pressure means better hunting. That is why every hunter seeks private land because he is looking for land that has less hunting pressure than Public land, otherwise why not just hunt Public. In order to have less hunting pressure there must be some access restrictions. The more access restrictions the better the hunting for you. In this example you have the opportunity to control the access and therefore your hunting enjoyment. You can exclude all others and have it just for yourself, which might allow you to shoot some birds and get a big buck. You might enjoy sharing it with some close friends so you hunt it a little more at the expense of your deer hunting. You may elect to share it with a bunch of folks and their friends and you may even go all the way and open it up for public access thereby cutting deeply into your opportunity. You may even consider renting the hunting rights to someone and taking the money.

I'm thinking that some folks would use it just for themselves, shoot a few birds and try to get a nice buck from one of the blinds. He might share it with one or two close friends. Others might share it with close friends, work associates and relatives. There might even be one or two who might let a complete stranger hunt it a day or so. There might even be someone who would rent it and take the money but I don't think there is anyone on this Forum who would just open it up to unrestricted and unlimited public hunting - even in this example.

Absolutely.

These scenarios are so far fetched it's hard for me to imagine this would ever happen. Maybe a nephew or close neighbor.
I honestly think I would pass on it. You would have to patrol it. Plenty of people would know the situation and help themselves in your absence.

I couldn't have anything interfere with my other hunting plans. My Fall seasons are fully booked. Wish I had more time as it is. Would I miss a Western bird hunt for this opportunity? afraid not.
