Let's take our own survey

Now that we are 4 weeks deep into the season I think it might be helpful and interesting if we took our own survey of birds on the ground. If we would just give our opinion as to whether we think birds numbers are up, down, or the same as last year we could make our own conclusions. It would also be helpful to ball park the part of the state we are hunting. Any other facts or opinions would be nice.

I hunted Stevens, Seward county 3 days and my guess is pheasants were slightly up and quail down on the same private ground as last year. Still down from '07.

Pheasants down in S Pawnee/N Edwards county and quail are up. Pheasants are up near Concordia, but I only saw 1 covey of quail. Haven't put enough hours in around there to say for sure. Quail did pretty well in Wabaunsee county, but the WIHAs are not producing. Milford pheasants are probably up a bit. Again, I've only spent 1 day at Milford and didn't cover much territory.

Good post. I've hunted private ground in Southwest Kansas (same ground I've been hunting for 10 years) and this year the bird numbers seem to be about average. Much better than last year, not as good as two years ago. I've hunted 6 days out there so far and have shot a limit 5 of the 6 days (one day was raining). I've also been hunting 3 times on WIHA ground in Northcentral Kansas and I think the bird numbers are pretty good up there as well. Not sure if it's as good as last year in the Northcentral part of Kansas, but it's pretty close. The first time out a buddy and I shot 5 roosters and 6 quail in a half day. The second time 4 of us shot 9 roosters in a half day and then 4 of us shot 12 in a half day. Each time out we've hunted from sun-up to around 1 pm. Curious to hear from others. KansasGsp

E Finney County increased pheasant #s
N Gray County increased pheasant #s
W Hodgeman County increased pheasant #s
all #s are in comparison to 2008
all areas seem to have good hen:rooster ratios
have not seen a quail in any of my haunts since 2006

Numbers

Hunted Rush county and the numbers on both Pheasants and quail seem to be above what I would call the norm for out there ( been hunting there 15 plus years)

Hunted Dickinson county and found the quail to be above the average year and the roosters seem to be down some in that area.

Have been hunting Jefferson county for Deer and have found several covey's but no roosters have been seen by me and I think i have walked the entire county. Would waste my time walking for birds. If I go it will be W of Salina.

Kick em up

Rooks is above average for quail and about average for pheasants. Very similar to last year in my opinion for the big birds. However, there seems to be quail everywhere. We found a lot of singles and doubles without finding the main covey in land that there is no way someone else busted them up.

Hunted land in Jewell county that I have hunted four around 4 yrs. Pheasant and quail were down, corn still in fields probably had a lot to do with it.

Excellent idea...glad you thought of it...this kind of survey is an actual one that can be accurate for us hunters. Thanks.:10sign:

Hunted around Wellington in Sumner county yesterday, saw birds in all but one spot but not to many and very wild. We did see two coveys of quail.
