Last Day in the Field for the Season Always Bittersweet

Just hunted my last weekend of the season and it was a good one. Saturday my hunting buddy and I each got a limit of pheasants and a few quail were bagged too. It was a mild, mostly clear day on the high plains of western Kansas where my Happy Hunting Grounds are located. And the bourbon cut the dust real good at the end of the day after the guns were put away. Sunday I was on my own and I focused on the quail that must be down by 75% this year. No luck on quail, but in my quest two cock pheasants came within range and joined the other four from Saturday. On the last day I always seem to be taking long looks at the big country and the vast horizons out there as the reality sets in of having to wait yet again for fall to arrive to be back in the fields. But come April its tom turkey season and I will be heading back out to that special country. Can hardly wait!

Very nice, good last hunt. My last hunt saw me bagging 4 quail in 4 shots, nice to go out on a high note.:D Yes next year seems so far away but soon we'll be seeing broods on the ground and before you know it next season will be upon us.

Bittersweet, oh so true! My two dogs (father & son) hardly ever get to hunt by themselves as most of the time my hunting buddies have their dogs with us. But, Sunday my two buddies were sick with the flu so I ended up joining a couple other buddies and they don't have dogs. So, my two dogs got after it all by themselves and man did they put on a show! They really hunted hard and we had multiple times when both dogs were on point together. But, bittersweet because my oldest dog is almost 11 and as I unloaded him from the truck for the last field I thought about how this could be it. I hope and pray he'll be around next season, but these Kansas summers are sure hard on old dogs.

not quite so for me- bones/joints are tired- two Britt's limping- decided not to go out the last day

38 years following pointing dogs- most always end the season on a good note- I did this year- all 4 pointing and backing and we got 1/2 our limit- great day!

the next season always has looked like it will be good- so till then- lots of memories- lots of pictures- almost like it's better to sit and look at the pictures and think back- isn't that what it's all about

now to get the Britt's to chill out- they've been doing strange things today- but they're in the house- -2 with a 40 mph wind- maybe they like this in-the-house thing- ya think

course we have no water- the well froze last night- working on that but sheese it's cold outside

My son and I went out after school last for one last walk, bagged 3 quail and saw 12 roosters & 2 hens as we where driving to our hunting spots. It was a great season but went by way to fast.
