Last Chance Kansas Upland Hunt

Went hunting with some old friends I had not seen in many years, my dad, and my friends extended family and friends. 12 people total, three dogs, and one day in the season. What a blast. I had a chance to kill my first wild Kansas quail, and wound up with 4 for the day. Temps started out cold in the single digits, but had warmed into thew high teens by days end. We saw perhaps 60 quail across 4 properties, and probably 20 or so roosters. I winged my first wild rooster but we were unable to recover him after 30 minutes of thorough searching and scanning with dogs. We probably wound up in the party with 30 or so quail, and ten or so roosters. I was using a Beretta a300 with an Improved modified choke from Kaw Valley precision, and a mix of Kent fast lead 5's and federal high bird sixes. I hit the rooster twice going straight away with the 6's, and knocked him down, but he popped his head up when he hit the ground and took off into a drainage ditch. I also noticed in the quail I killed with the 6's, the recovered pellets were smashed flat and several were severely deformed. I wonder if they are using soft shot? I was unimpressed with the terminal results. Several things I learned going forwards. Game vests/harnesses are the way to go when long distance walks are expected. 7.5 pounds is kinda heavy to tote through the thick stuff for miles at a time. 5's are overkill on quail.
