Last 4 days of the season

well, looks like i will in fact be able to get out the last 4 days of the season, heading for Pratt/Greensburg area next Thursday. probably a good thing too, haven't been out since early December and my PP is going nuts. yesterday he was so intent on chasing doves flying off the fence in our backyard, that he ran right into the wrought iron fencing surrounding a new tree we planted last fall....plowed right into it and bent it all to hell.......he is a bull, weighs about 84 lbs. and runs like a deer...guess he wants to go one more time...
the old veteran Vizsla just stood there and watched him....funny, didn't even faze him........anyone else getting out for the closer?

I wish!! Best of luck to you and anyone else that gets a chance to go. I know the roosters still need thinning out in some areas, but I won't get a chance to help.

:cheers:to a wonderful season ending trip for ya

Good luck to you. I was really hoping to make it out one more time but it's not going to happen:mad: For those of you who make it out, enjoy and please take some pics to share with the less fortunate.

recent photo taken this fall......of Bear

I see why you call him bear. That's a big boy. Is that medical/atletic tape you're using on those boots? Duct tape is strong but it's tough getting off the dogs after the hunt.

no KB, those are the standard boots from dogbooties.com......they have a Velcro stretch strap that wraps around the top of the boot and secures it very well, almost impossible for them to slip off....i use the lightest weight they make them in, a 330 cordura count, the dog's nails will wear them out after about 4 days of hunting, but i like the lighter weight boot because it flexes well on his feet, he pays no attention to them and i have trouble conditioning his feet before season, so when i run him and the vizsla 4 or 5 days consecutively, their feet are a mess without them....they really work well for me and my situation.....great in snow and ice, keeps the pads from getting cut or raw......

Bear is definitely a fitting name. Good looking dog.:coolpics:

yeah, my wife wanted to name him diesel.....he runs over everything that gets in his way....he is just a bull of a dog, solid hunter, but not a world beater, good around the house in the off season too....well, my wife and the vizsla might challenge that remark, but i sure like him.

hunter 94,

I use the same boots but use the heavier weight material. I have the same problem with the nails poking through. I glue a piece of old rubber bike tires to cover the holes and it works great. I boot the dogs now everytime, it saves there feet so much its worth the money.

Zeepo, you might want to check this stuff out, i haven't had time yet, it is called Shoe Goo.....a sort of flexible rubber coating, you can paint/apply it on hunting boots (mainly for the toes to resist abrasion) or supposedly dog boots and it makes them last, cuts down on the wear or so they say......i will get some in the off season and test it out over the summer or early next fall, at $10 a set for the booties, they sure are worth the expense to keep my dogs hunting hard for 4 or 5 days on a trip....

I have tried it and it helps but try using the shoe goo to glue on the rubber pieces. Works much better. I just cut a small piece of rubber to cover up the end of boot about an inch on each side. You need to put some paper in the boot to keep its shape but these now last me all season. The rubber may start to come off sometimes but I just reglue them back on.

cool, you are way ahead of me....thanks.

i tried the Lewis boots years ago......i don't like messin with duct tape and the heavy rubber doesn't allow my dogs' feet to flex.....they are good for turning heavy thorns though, but i am sold on the ones i use now.

Ok, the vizsla wanted equal time......Cooper, Bears' kennel mate

Great pic. From the looks of that gray mug, that's not the first rooster Cooper's brought back to you. My old lab is totally gray in the face but still going. Not able to jump up in the back of the truck after about the first half day though.

You guys ever try these boots--I like these the best--my vet in Western KS. Who hunts all the time told me about them. Have used them for 3 years and still have them. Just duct tape them on.

I too have tried the lewis boots but again the duct tape in cold weather is a pain plus if your hunting in snow the snow would pack in those boots and cut my dog in between the toes.
