I was wanting some advice on hunting pressure in this area. Thinking of going out there and hunting public land the week after Thanksgiving..Kinda a scouting/hunting trip then going back later on this year depending on the weather

Tons of pressure on the WIHA around Larned normally. Thanksgiving isn't nearly as bad as the opener.....haven't spent much time on the WIHA around Greensburg.

Loads of other old threads w/ titles relative to your search in case you want to hear more.

thanks for the info ill do some searchs...never hunted phes. in kansas cant wait till season..i even thought about going farther northwest in the state..

wherever you go, the first week in Dec. sees a lot fewer hunters, after Thanksgiving, a lot of guys hang it up, except for maybe a Christmas holiday hunt, but you do have to contend with the deer rifle season in Dec.
you might want to work your field time around the deer season, especially the weekends.

Deer season starts the Wednesday after Thanksgiving and lasts 11 days (the following Sunday). I'm not sure how much pressure that puts on the WIHA's. I've heard some say they deer hunted it and never saw another hunter, and others said there was constant action of hunters coming and going.

never had issues with deer hunters in the feilds we hunt. They have pointed out some good areas that holds birds when we stop along the road to chat.

Thanks for all the info guys...Hey Cheesy where abouts in swmo are you? im nw of springfield

I have always gone to SW Kansas the first weekend of December figuring that most hunters will be out deer hunting. It has always been a really great plan until the last two or three years.
Lots more bird hunters out the last two years especially. Used to be that we could hit WIHA all day and maybe see one or two other groups. Last year we saw one or two groups on our way out of the first field. The last few years we try to be extra-thorough in the first field, knowing that it's the best chance we're going to get all day. After that, you should expect to be the second, third, fourth, etc, group to hit each field. Better shoot straight, you may not get a lot of chances after sunrise!
FWIW, I really like the Dodge City/Larned/Greensburg area. I'll keep going back as long as I can find a few birds here and there.

P.S. I also personally like that area because I have family down that way and because for some reason I shoot really well out there. Hope I'm not jinxing myself, but I haven't missed a bird in 2 years! (In that area) I miss birds all the time other places...

Basically 30 miles north of Joplin on the Kansas line.

Getting ready for dove season here, will hit Shawnee Trail CA which is about 5 miles from my house and Talbot CA over north of Mt Vernon. Always do well at Talbot, but moved to far away to hunt it a lot.

sweet yea im about 20 mins from Talbot, Hunted Shawnee a couple times last year moved 3 coveys in one day last year out there we hit a couple of other spots the same day also had a pretty good time...but i think alot of it was luck lol just happened to turn out at the right time at the right place

Greensburg

Opening week is pretty tough in Greensburg.

A couple of years ago when quail season started a week later there were not nearly as many folks.

Plenty of WIHA and management land around Greensburg and Pratt.
