Kepa and I got out this morning for our first pheasant hunt of the season.

This morning Remy was kind enough to have Kepa and I join him and Gus on a morning hunt at his place. As we were getting ready to hunt (just a few minutes before 8am) Remy suggested we put a bell on Kepa as the switch grass was so tall and very thick in places.
As the hunt progressed I was sure glad we did. The switch grass / cover is certainly some of the thickest I’ve seen. The bell was nice to help keep track of. We laid out a plan to hunt the edge of this large crp / terraced / food plot stripped field. 10 or 15 minutes into the hunt I Remy got a chance and folded a rooster with one shot and Remy had one in the game bag.
It didn’t take long after for Remy to send two shots at an another rooster and folded him up as well. Remy said later both roosters were under Gus’s points.
Kepa and I in the meantime were flushing lots of hens in range but no roosters for us yet. Shortly after Remy’s second rooster they flushed one that was a bit far out for him but its course was bringing it right by me. It was a beautiful rooster, lit up from the sun that was at my back, white ring around the neck long tail feathers, I could see it all. My Remington barked once, nothing, twice, nothing a third time still nothing!!! Kepa was unimpressed!!!
We continued on and less than a hundred yards later I got the chance to redeem my self on a close flushing rooster and sealed the deal with one shot. I could tell Kepa was impressed and in her happy place bringing the rooster back.
Remy and I met up for a quick discussion on how to walk the backside of the field. Kepa and I were going to a spot while Remy and Gus looped around to push out a draw in the crp field to us. We split up and it didn’t take long for Remy and Gus to put another rooster up in range and with one shot Remy had his limit.
Kepa and I couldn’t quite make it to the designated spot before all heck was breaking loose but on the fringe another rooster (once again lit up from the sun at my back) was angling on a path to cross right in-front of me. This time when the Remington barked once the rooster did fold and Kepa made another retrieve.
I only needed one more and a hundred yards later a rooster flushed in-front of Kepa and I. My first shot was a clean miss, my second rocked him but he kept going my third seemingly had no effect but then the rooster went vertical climbing higher and higher until reversing direction and coming straight down.
A heart shot I am sure, the challenge for Kepa and I was the rooster had gotten pretty far out and over a terrace that was above us. So I didn’t have a great reference on where it went down. Kepa and I looked for 20 or so minutes, Remy and Gus joined us but we couldn’t find the rooster. My personal choice when I lose a rooster I count it as part of my limit. So I was done for the day.
We all walked back to the road where a buddy of Remy’s was driving by and he gave us a ride to our vehicles. That was really nice thank you sir!!!
Of course a big thanks to Remy for the invite, he has a beautiful place and is a habitat first guy that is really nice to see!!! Thanks again Remy!!!! Kevin and Kepa.
Side note: I know first hand McFarmer is the same way and both Remy and McFarmer do a ton to help the wildlife in their habitat / farming practices. My hat is off to both of these guys.
