Kansas Quail Areas

I plan on traveling to Kansas to hunt quail/pheasant after the first of the year. This will be my first trip and most likely will be hunting wiha only with a friend of mine. Any suggestions on what areas might be best to start at would be appreciated. I am more focused on quail than pheasant, but would not pass up the opportunity to get my first rooster if posible. Just trying to narrow down which town I should stay at while I am there.

Give me a rough idea of where you're headed. I know a couple of WIHA spots that hold coveys that I won't be able to make it back to this season.

I will be coming from Dallas, up I35 through Wichita. Anywhere from Wichita to Dodge City is possible. Was thinking of staying in Great Bend, and trying some wiha in that area.

I would recommend following the forecast from KDWP for quail as it's been pretty spot on (IMO). www.kdwp.org

Where you're going, hit the WIHA areas (also on KDWP site) and look for plum thickets, native grass buffers and cut crops edges. That's what I'd do.

I think you've got a pretty good area. The area has been producing both quail and pheasants this year.
