Its seems from this forum that if a person was to hunt only public ground. More hunters are choosing Kansas over SD. The Kansas section is busy with posts. Just curious, those that have hunted public in Kansas and SD which do you prefer?

South Dakota, no comparision

Kansas for me

South dakota is way better for pheasants but its hard to beat kansas when you want to have a combo hunt of upland birds. From pheasants, 2 species of quail (bobs, and blues) and chickens. I love having that pheasant/quail combo because it offers the best dog work you can imagine. I have yet to see a quail in SD.

Kansas is better for combos but if you want to kill only 3 roosters and be done in an hour go to South Dakota. personally I like huntting all day and being able to kill up to 12 birds in one day(4 phez and 8 quail).

But this is just my opionion. Best regards:cheers:

you have a good point there Kansas, I am all about working the dogs too.

I've never been to S.D. but I hunt w/ guys who've been. They prefer the style of hunting we do in KS which is, 2 -4 guys hunting over dogs where you can see them work vs. what they've done in SD with a line of 20+ hunters pushing toward blockers where everybody shoots at the same birds.

I did hunt like that once on opening day in KS; it's not for me.

Good points all the way around. You have pheasants and quail in Kansas and Pheasant and sharp Tails in SD. The drive and the weather would also come into play. 8 birds in Kansas and 6 in SD. We hunted all day in SD... Sharps at sunrise and pheasants til sunset. It was wet in SD and dry and hot in Kansas.
You know ....... You can't go wrong either way, both beat the hell out of western Colorado..... unless we are talking Elk. :D:D

You have got that right. I was not able to make my trek to Western Coloradothis year to chase a big bull. :(:( The alternative this year is that my wife and I have cow elk tags for my place in Kansas. Taking an elk on this Kansas ranch hasn't taken place in our 100+ years of ownership, but is doable this year and a goal of mine.

Very cool...... To be able to take an Elk on it's native plains habitat will be very rewarding and very "right". There's not much better than Cow Elk Meat. Have a safe and successful hunt and enjoy the good eats.

Good luck M.R. on taking an Elk. Just call me when you have the steak ready and I'll come a runnin! lol My Son and B-in-Law have and in on some property in Co for a Cow Elk and I can't wait! YUM, YUM!!! We are heading back to Co. Thurs. am. Hoping the weather gets through by then.

Rod,
Dress for COLD and Snow, I'm sure you know the program. It snowed all last night and into today, we are at 6800 ft and have a good seven/eight inches of snow on the ground, the job site at 8300 ft has twice that.
Good Hunting.

Great post only disagreement is pheasants are not that easy on public land in SD. You will work for your birds. As mentioned before if you hunt the right areas of SD and are fortunate enough to limit early you can chase sharpies.

I've built up a lot of vacation time at the current job so once I get my dog situation sorted out fall should look like something this for me.

October - Chasing ruffed grouse and an early season hunt or two for pheasants in MN.

November - Pheasants with the occaisonal sharptail walk in SD.

December - Bob's, pheasant and maybe chase some PC in Kansas.

Good species variety, generally good weather to hunt in and mid-season trips usually equal good hunting/less competion on public ground.
