Can hardly hear a sound in the Kansas forum. Shhh. Hear anything? Not a peep, cackle, or a caw. Wait a minute. In the distance, a dull roar. Ah, the combines of wheat harvest. The wheat looks great around the state. Thick, high stubble fields will be waiting for us in November. Some farmers still don't put herbicide on the stubble which leads to weed patches and weedy terrace channels, favorites of hunkering cock pheasants. Some farmers use stripper headers on their combines that leave the entire shaft in the field and much higher cover. Some farmers' terraces are in erosion control vegetation, creating pheasant habitats in the middle of feeding areas. Walk-in acreage continues to increase. Yes, it's pretty quiet, but aren't things looking up for November?
