Kansas Hunting History - Quail Stamps and Upland Game Stamps

I ran across a Waterfowl stamp website that has a good 3-part article on the history of Kansas Quail Stamps and Upland Game Stamps. It includes a lot of good history on Kansas hunting regulations too. The Kansas Quail Stamps were one of the first State issued game stamps in the US, starting in 1937.

It looks like the first bag limits on quail were put in place in 1905 with a bag limit of 20. It also says that "At the end of the 1950s, quail populations decreased precipitously on farms across Kansas. In 1960, bag limits were greatly reduced and many farmers did not allow hunting on their farms at all. Quail hunting prospects were perceived as dismal, at best."

I grew up in Kansas during the 50's and 60's and started hunting quail in the mid 60's. I recall the daily bag limit as 8, but that has been a long time. I do remember having the Upland Game Stamps. I wish I had kept them.

There are 3 parts to the article:

Seems I remember my grandad telling me it was 8 and their place was so good they needed to take several of the kids so the drive could be worth it. Was a two hour drive and they didn’t want to go unless they could shoot 25 to 30 birds. They hunted around Yates Center.

ND had stamps, I remember my grandpa taking me to Scheels to get my stamps. Waterfowl, upland, furbearers, and federal waterfowl. Deer was a draw by mail.I know I still have them and wish I would have valued them more.

I think it has been a limit of 8 since the mid 1960's. I didn't hunt for a few years in the late 70's and early 80's but I think I would have heard if it changed. Back then it was usually just my friend and I hunting, mostly without dogs, so limits were rarely a problem, ha! He did have an old Brittany that was mostly just a farm dog without training. He wasn't very interested in pointing birds, but could definitely find them when they were down!
