Wow,

I did not realize how quickly a snowstorm could ruin your week! 10" in our area on Tuesday. Snow drifts that could swallow men as well as dogs. Tried to hunt Wednesday afternoon and it was impossible. The locals say the population is down but we did not see any signs of that being the case. Tuesday morning while it was snowing we moved 30 pheasants and a covey of quail in 3 hours. 5 hunters with 4 dogs down. We never got to try our best spots because of the abbreviated hunt. We had some pretty good dog work with several birds holding tight for our setters. Came in the house we rent for supper and the power goes out. Landlord informs us it ain't coming back on tonight so we pack up for the 20 hour drive home. The temperature at 10:00pm when we left was -14 F. Drove 4 days and hunted one and a half. Not the best of luck but very grateful the dogs are OK and everyone got back home safely. We have been coming to Kansas in January the last couple of years and had better weather than this trip. Oh well there's always next year. Love your state, wish I lived closer thanks for sharing it with us boys from North Carolina.

Glad you got into some birds! I was out in the same snow storm. It was a pretty good one for KS these days. I presume you were on the W side of Salina and Concorida?

I was also out hunting during the storm on Tuesday and Wednesday. I went out to Decatur County. The snow was beautiful to hunt in, and aside from falling down constantly in the deep snow, it wasn't so bad really. The drive home Wednesday afternoon was a little tricky as well.

One question for you guys who were out during the blizzard... Were the birds incredibly spooky for you too? We couldn't get within 100 yards of a rooster all day exept for one that we both shot. I've always loved hunting new snow because the birds head to thicker cover and sometimes sit tighter. During the blizzard, they were busting at 100 yards plus. Very frustrating.

On the other hand, my buddy's lab caught a hen and it took me several increasingly firm "nudges" to flush a hen that my GWP was pointing. So some of the hens apparently got the "sit tight" memo. Just not the roosters...

We sure saw a lot of birds. Just not up close.:(
