I just got back from SD, and Bandit absolutely rocked! He was 20 pounds of raw fury; trailing and flushing birds left and right, running down cripples, retrieving (believe it or not), and even pointing a couple times!
Here's my favorite story from the trip:
It was our last day, and we were just one bird short of our limit. Bandit was in the truck because he had cut his chest on some barbed wire earlier in the day. One of the labs we were with flushed a rooster and I knocked it down in an open field. The dog went to retrieve it, but the bird was on the run. The pair disappeared into the brush, and a couple minutes later the dog came back empty-handed (or should I say empty-mouthed?).
We went to the last place we'd seen the bird and found a pile of tail feathers. We suspect that the dog had caught the bird by the tail, then got hung up in a fence and lost him. We searched for about 20 minutes, but weren't able to come up with anything.
As a last-ditch effort, I said, "Why don't we give Bandit a try?" I got him from the truck and led him to where the feathers were. He immediately got on the trail and tracked the bird for over 1/2 mile, finding him still alive tucked deep in the brush. I've never been do proud of that little guy!
Never discount the power of a big heart in a little dog.
What a way to end the trip!
