just got a gsp. looking for as much help as possible.

Me and my fiance just got a 3 year old gsp and the guy we got her from said she is trained for hunting. I took her out on the leash and she was sniffing around and seemed like she did well. I want to see if she will be ready to go pheasant hunting in october. Any advice anybody could recommend on training would be highly appreciated. Training toys, commands, stuff like that. Thank you!!

You should ask the guy you got her from what commands he used.

And you should know if the dog is gun conditioned and if not be careful doing that but if its been hunted that should be Ok.

Don't shoot around it unless its watching a pheasant.

and most importantly bond with the dog.

Enroll in Bleu's (BleuBijou) snake avoidance class on 6-6? Pick his brain on shorthairs and then try to get your dog out a few mornings between now and the opener.

thank you for the responses. I will am going to work with her as much as I possibly can. can anyone recommend a good collar for training? I saw a redhead shock collar from bass pro that got good reviews for around $100. not looking to spend a fortune but do want something that works good. I appreciate all the help.

Get her in the backyard and with a fishingpole and a wing see what she does. Do not let her catch it! Use the "Whoa" command to stop her when or if she points! If she stops or holds solid with the whoa command while the wing is on the ground in front of her she has had some training before. If not, you will have to train her to Whoa. There is several different methods on how to do this and You tube will be your friend along with some good training books. When you take her to the field, well before any hunting season, use a long lead with her 15-20'. you can plant wings with some scent without her watching you and work into the wind with the long lead. If she is having trouble locating your planted wings you can kind of direct her and when she gets birdy and stops, again use "Whoa" and make her hold it for extended periods. May be short 15-20 seconds at first, but keep extending the time that she holds. If she moves, just put her back in the original spot and repeat Whoa. You can use Whoa around the house when feeding etc. Start slow with the gunfire, maybe just a cap gun or 22. I would use live pigeons or chukar and you should have the long lead on just in case she bolts. If she runs or cowhers stop!! If she wants to chase it is a good thing. A buddy will be a great help on this portion as you could stand 50 yds away and throw even a dead bird up and shoot and then your buddy can release the dog. she should come screaming to get the bird. Make sure the lead is still attached so you can grab it and bring her to you for the retrieve portion!! This is just a snidbit of what you will be learning to do. Goodluck and do some research with videos and books and you will do fine!

awesome! thank you so much for all the help guys!! I will see if I can do the wing training on the fishing pole tonight and see how she does. I appreciate all the help!

She is 3 years old and trained for hunting. Does that mean she has had birds shot over her already?

I agree you need to find out what "trained for hunting" means exactly.

If she has been trained for hunting, then at the very least she should come to you, heel and point a set of wings. Like others have said, it is crucial you find out what commands she has been trained on.

forget the e-collar unless you have experience with one and know what you are doing there is no quicker way to ruin a dog
