Jonny house made out of a barrel

I was looking at Gundog magazine and they had plans for a small jonny house made from a 55 gallon plastic barrel.

Wondering if anyone has ever done this. I'm thinking I may try one and if it works good maybe make a couple of them to place around the acerage.

Looked like a neat idea.
 
I used a metal box, sheet metal, with a couple of vents in the top. I thought it might be to hot, but I never lost a bird, and they reproduced! laid eggs which I hatched, had a new generation. I don't why the barrel wouldn't work.
 
I have a few barrels and I believe access to more so I figure the worse that can happen is I cut up a barrel for no reason. I'm going to try one or two at first and if it works will spread them out for about a mile at intervals so I can release birds along the way and not run them out of the country when working the pointers.
