Finally got out today after having been stuck in the house for a number of days being sick.
My plan was to just hunt for a few hours so I wouldn't wear myself out completely and take just the one dog.
So, I loaded up Obie One and off we went. Dumped him out at the first spot where I found two coveys a couple weeks ago. On the way back to the truck walking the road I flushed a nice size covey out of the ditch. I watched where they landed and called Obie over and we never found them again. Ghosts..
Across the road we found another covey and played with it for a bit. They were skitish and wouldn't hold. So I loaded him back in the truck and sat with the window down eating an orange and about 25 minutes later they had regrouped for the most part. Took Obie out again and he found them right away but they only stayed put for a few seconds and flushed wild.
Third spot I dumped him out and we walked most of the area and on the way back to the truck the Garmin alerted me that Obie was on point 78 yards away, almost in front of me. I picked up the pace and kept an eye on the Garmin. I got within 53 yards and still didn't see him, and then all of the sudden the Garmin had him at 63 yards. Wondering whats going on at this point. I near a big thicket and I see a long white tail sticking up in the air. Obie has his chest practically on the ground like he's looking under a truck.
He's on one side of the thicket and I'm on the other. He has them PINNED and they can't come out my side! Sure enough he stuck a big covey! His first covey he has really been able to pin down this year for any amount of time.
They flush and one falls. At this point I've forgotten that I was even supposed to be sick! Kind of like a proud dad when your kid makes the winning goal!
According to the Garmin in a little over 3 hours of hunting he traveled 14.15 miles.
Nice to see it all come together with a young dog.
