is the corn being harvested around Pierre

I was wondering how the corn harvest is going around Pierre, I am planning on hunt Kansas some but still am thinking about making a trip to the area north of Pierre, about 15-30 miles north that is, and was wondering how the progress is going.

also anxious to hear about the conditions around Pierre, as I will be headed to the area for the first time right after Thanksgiving dinner. I will be doing public area/self giuded, so if anyone wants to give some pointers on where to start, I am listening! I am thinking about starting in the National Grasslands and wearing out some boot leather to see if I can find some birds!! Good luck!

WIhunt,
I thought about going maybe the day after turkey day and going a little bit north of their depending on the corn harvest. Where are you staying at and do you have dogs. I hunted the grass lands a few years back, three years ago, and got into some sharpies as well as pheasants. I hunted the Northern part, I hope you do wel
We hunted just south of highway 34, and as far east as you can go. There is a small place on the North side of the road we did well at until my GSP and my buddys GSP found a porcipine. Mine only had a few spines in his snout, my buddys came out looking like GWP. I was ready to go the vet until my buddy asked for my multi tool and he started pulling away. I told him to cut the end off of the spine and they would come out easier, he just went to town pulling them out. I took my scissors to the spines, quills, on my dog and they came out pretty easy. My friends dog looked like he tangled with a woolly mammoth by the time he got done.

copheasant hunter: We are staying in a cabin at the Farm Island State Rec area just south of Pierre. There is 3 of us and we have 2 labs we will be hunting with. None of us have ever been to SD. Both of our dogs are new to pheasant hunting this year (mine is a duck dog mostly), but mine has been doing pretty well on the WI birds (all stocked farm birds on public land). We are just hoping for some scenery and a few flushes, we aren't going to be dissapointed if we dont limit out. Just hoping for a good time. Bird hunting has always been a second passion, but since I got 2 great bucks with a bow allready, this is my year to shoot birds, and I am afraid I am getting addicted.

WIhunt,
Congrads on the two bucks with the bow, yeh bird hunting can get addicting. If you do not have much luck in the grasslands you might go up road 1804 north of Pierre and hunt along the river, try to get into the thick cover as that is where the birds will be after they leave the feeding fields and also get around the feed fields in the evening.
If I go that is where I will be hunting, I will be staying at the Outpost Lodge in one of their cabins or in my overhead at their campsite. Good people and great food if you are looking for a place to eat. It is about 15 miles North of Pierre on 1804.
Also a great place to eat is the Cattlemans steak house 29608 hwy 34, phone # 605 224 9774. Also great food.
If you need anything for your hunt, license ,shells, or such there is a place in Pierre called the dakomart, up stairs is a grocery store and down stairs is a sporting goods store.
As far as the birds, if you go to the grass lands do not be surprised if your dog gets birdy in grass that looks like it could not hide a bird because the sharpies could be in there, as I found out the hard way the first year I hunted there. If it is wet you can watch along the side of the road for tracks as it helped me and my buddy one year.
Lots of luck and drink one for me, that is if you drink, heck everyone drinks , some just drink soda and water and such :)

We are hunting the area north of Pierre right now. Hunted yesterday and today (Saturday the 21st). Most crops are still in the field, but they are harvesting like crazy to take advantage of the warm dry conditions. A lot of the hunting depends on if you have good dogs or not. If you have good dogs then the walkin ares are good, as well as WPAs and other fields. With just okay dogs then I would concentrate on field edges and ditches. With no dogs I would hunt nothing but ditches. We also like WPAs, especially if the weather is nasty or it is snowing. Right now there is no snow at all and all the fields are open. Most of the birds we have killed have been loafing on field edges, especially those with cut wheat. Corn produces birds too, but if isn't cut then they can run a long ways before they flush.

We are hunting near Onida, Agar, and Gettysburg, but any of the areas with crops east of the MO river are good. The Wheatland Inn in Onida has rooms with a stove and fridge for $45/night--but you need to bring our own pans, utensils, and plates--he doesn't have anything to cook with. The deer season opened today so it was hard to get a room in Gettysburg or Hoven. We also stay at South Whitlock--that guy has nice cabins but they are pricey. If you have 4 guys it works out okay, but for 2 it can get expensive ($145 night).

We like to hunt new areas every time we come but we have found this general area north of Pierre to the ND border to be pretty good and doesn't seem to have many people hunting it.

The weather has been good and should be really nice tommorow, but then it changes. We usually have better luck in good weather, but if it is snowing it can be incredible. The long-range forcast is calling for good weather after Thanksgiving. Good luck.

Riverman,
Thanks for that information, hopefully they will get the corn out soon. I guess everyone is hoping for good weather so they can get it out then the hunting should really get good.
Thanks again for the info
