My opening day was last Wed. I hit the Iowa River corridor by Merengo. I didn't see as much as I was hoping to. Only rooster I saw, I shot. He was a young one. Ran for a short while, but Otis had no problem scooping him up. His first official flush and retrieve of a pheasant. (we've done a bunch of duck hunting this year, so he's gotten some practice on retrieving birds)
Walked the entire day and only saw about 6-8 hens that Otis successfully tracked and flushed.
I'm really happy with his performance for being 1.5 yrs old.
Before anyone asks, he's a mutt. Mother was a full blooded Red Healer farm dog that go pregnant by a passerby. Assumingely a lab mix of sorts.
He has great energy and drive and that's all I care about!
I'm planning a trip up to NW IA in the next couple weeks.
