Indiana 2025

Did my first real pheasant hunt in Indiana 11/20. Hit two spots in Benton county and 1 in Newton. The first thing is noticed in all three is that the cover is far better this year than the last two seasons. Very encouraging!

We had 4 guys and 3 dogs. Weather was damp and dreary with little wind. Thought it would be a good day to be a bird dog. We kicked up 25 birds. They held very tight and the majority were cocks. Probably 5 to one. 20 cocks and 5 hens.

We also say 5 deer (one decent buck), a mink, and 3 coyotes. We bagged 6 birds, well we shot 5 and my dog caught a cock that was buried in cover so think he tried to run for a bit, then hit the edge of the cover took 2-3 flaps and got waylaid by a little Brittany. Dog did not want to release that bird which is unusual. I think because it was fighting so hard. I had to fight to get him to release and bird went about trying to tear my hand apart with spurs.

Finished on a little corner piece where we had one guy block in some thick stuff. I had to cross a bridge to get to where he was, and he walked away. I took dog over to where he had been standing and dog goes on point. Blocker wouldn't believe it. he had been standing within 2 feet of where dog was pointing. I started kicking around and nothing. But dog wouldn't leave. Kicked around and kicked around and finally a cock took off. I never saw or felt it until them. Bagged it! Cover is thick.

One of friends dogs got caught on a coyote set up. Dog had wondered off as we were loading up trucks. There is a lone tree an dog is near it making some odds noises. I thought maybe treed a squirrel or something. Dog would come so owner goes to see what's up. Can see he's on the ground doing something then screams. "I need HELP!" I got my fat old ass running about 150 yards to him carrying my vest (it has a wire cutter). Get there and he couldn't release the leg hold trap because when he tried his dog was biting the hell out of him and he couldn't do it one handed.

I hunt these spots every year and easily the most birds we have seen in 10 years. last few years we might have seen 7 -10 total and on one, zero.

Did my first IN quail hunt yesterday. Conditions were absolutely perfect after a scary cold start. Left my house and it was 12 degrees. Got to buddies a little further south and East and it's 24. 50 minute drive to other side of Indy. Light winds, partly sunny and about 2-3inch of snow on the ground.

Just the two of us and my Brittany Angus. Good start as first spot kicked up a small covey 5 minutes in. Next spot, he dropped me and dog off on one end of a long fence row. he drove to other end and walked towards me a ways. Didn't see any tracks until I got to him. We walked back towards the truck from where he came and dog goes on point. he walked within 10 feet of a big covey and they let him keep going.

Next spot saw tracks but couldn't find any.

Last spot we have found birds many time over 30 years. He dropped me for a long walk and he drove to the end point. Got to an L in a fence row and go goes on point in some hairy stuff with a downed tree. Perfect place for a big covey! Up goes bird and it's a single. I was waiting for others to come up and it got too far and I didn't get a shot.

There's a 15 acre wood/briar patch that i walked around and in but didn't see anything. Back to fence row I had been in and I kicked op the single I had flushed earlier after a nice point. Missed. About 150 yards further down the fence I thought dog was taking a dump but as I got closer he as all twisted up on point. Big covey explodes behind a bush from me and didn't give me a good shot. most flew to the briar patch.

There are two small patches of cover one about 3 acres and the other 1 acre, near the road. headed over there and buddy goes one way around and I went the other. He threw a corn cob he had found into the cover and a big covey explodes! Tossed it right on top of them. LOL. Worked a couple singles put of that for the dog, then headed to the other patch and found a couple more.

Very good quail day for Indiana and put 5 in the bag for A snack during the Packers ass whipping of the bears tomorrow.

War wounds! Dig it. We have birds here in Ohio as well. By no means a lot. How many groups of hunters can go shoot 6 birds at a spot and not hurt the population? Not many

Yes, same here. A lot of places I’ll shoot one and move on. Occasionally 2. We have birds and cover its just fragmented. Luckily very little hunting pressure. I know of one place 13 cocks were taken and some still left over. All private
