In the snow again...

It was so nice outside that I had to take the dogs out. The walking was easier and I got a good picture before I even parked the truck.

There are some bird out there that offer good points for the dogs.

But the snow makes it tough to get in a position to get a good picture of the flushing birds. I ended up flushing a couple of hens on the day. I saw a lot of pheasant tracks and some other tracks that could belong to the quail. The dogs had a few points that were unproductive and it is possible that they were pointing at areas the quail were hanging out in. The snow still made it difficult to cover all the ground but hopefully that will change over the next week. We should get a good melt this week that will allow me and the dogs to cover more ground.

I did see this guy on the way out.

All those birds I've been seeing must have found a way to avoid him. The hawk was within 150-300 yards of all the birds I saw today.

Hey Brian...any houses for sale in your neighborhood ! J/K It must be great to be able to constantly give your pups bird work!

Houses and lots are available!

When we were looking for a house about 8 years ago I wanted to get a place that I could have a lot of land to do many of the things I enjoy doing with the dogs. But that much land costs money. So, we decided to build where we did knowing that it was close to the club that I already belonged to.

I was driving home and as I drove past a bird feeder under a pine tree I saw about 10 quail feeding. Not the best picture but it's what I got.

Actually, it is a pretty bad picture but I was happy to see some of them.

How far from the area with cover do you think this was? Must have been good to see them, they have been out there since October.

They were about 300 yards from the edge of the cover in the fields and across the road. They were 500-600 yards from the area I usually found them. I may have to start looking for them in an area that is wooded and not close the the fields.

These guys are obviously traveling to find what they need.
Did you ever think of hanging onto some of the stock to make periodical releases during the year to help maintain the covey strength in the wild?

I held on to some one year but it is a lot to get them through the winter. The water tubes will freeze and then I have to go to the pen each day with fresh water. I don't always have enough time to do that. I may get some birds in the spring to release but I haven't decided that yet.
