If you want to hunt go to KS, if you want to hike stay in CO

Just got back from the Larned area for 3 days. My brother and Dad in Kansas City go out there twice a year to hunt private land. In three days of hunting central KS I bagged as many birds as I did all year in CO. This year was wonderful compared to last year in CO but damn does Kansas put our state to shame in terms of numbers and habitat. Instead of seeing 15-20 flush at a time we were seeing upwards of a hundred birds or more kick up. Seriously entire hillsides would be crawling with birds. Had the time of my life. Nothing like surrounding a giant thicket and being able to shoot 5 shells, reload, and shoot more before the birds stop flushing. I am confident we saw a thousand birds or more in the days we hunted.

I'm hoping the coldest part of winter is gone and we have a good carry over population to next year. With the CRP program going by by with our over-extended government we may not have many good hunting seasons left for pheasants.

Ringneck, we have done really well in CO this year (never came home with less than two of my three bird limit per day-trip yet)...But what you describe is exactly why I want to get out to KS - that and a general sense of adventure always exploring new areas + the added bonus of possibly a few quail in the mix! :)

This is my first year to live anywhere near close enough to spend regular time chasing truly-wild roosters (as opposed to the pen-raised duds)...I have hunted this year mostly just day-trips here in eastern CO closer to Denver, one two-day hunt in sw NE with friends on LOTS of private ground (with LOTS of birds just like you describe). I am trying to complete my first-year "sampler" round with a final bang in KS! You've got my blood pumping!!!! :D

Just got back from the Larned area for 4 days. My brother and Dad in Kansas City go out there twice a year to hunt private land. wow you had to have been on private

Ringneck, sounds to me that you guys made some great memories. Congrats. Any photo's?

Oh BTW, I hear ya on the government CRP program thing...Been telling myself for the last couple years, better get out there & be a witness NOW before it may be too late and I have to painfully read "back-in-the-day" classic hunting-stories! :( I sure hope that doesn't come true!!! But it's gonna be really hard for any amount of hunters to raise/replace that kind of serious wildlife/habitat $$$ if the gov't winds up cutting everybody off cold-turkey!

A Little Side Note: Usually, before I burn up the first "5 shells" - I'm on the way home or to the cafe & not allowed to play the game anymore! HAHAHA...Sounds like a really good, big-headed recipe to burn up a box of shells & come up empty-handed next time out, huh!!! :D

I am glad that kansas was good to you. But I see these #s all the time in Colorado. Secret is private ground. You hunted private also. You cant bash a state when it comes to private or limited access. I will say yeee haaa on Quail in kansas. I have had some kick ass trips.

I didn't say the birds were always within shooting range, but when its -4 outside shooting a few rounds of 12 gauge will warm you right up, and you just never know I have made some long range shots in my day just getting lead in the air at a bird that should have been out of range.

A few pics

Friday we shot 11 between the 3 of us (only 10 in the pic as my brother cleaned one already). Saturday we got 12 (no pics), and Sunday we only hunted for a couple of hours and shot 9.

We don't have any private land to hunt on in Colorado so we've been going to Kansas for years. An old college friend of my brothers called and sayed he had permission on lots of property by Burlington, CO. and would we like to come hunt.
We went out around new years and had a blast. Lots of land and lots of birds. The hunting was as good as I've seen anywhere. Hope he calls again soon.
