Goose - here have been numerous posts about trucks, atvs and fish houses being on the ice. Common sense goes a long way but if no moving water or other unique thing the ice should be more than safe to walk on. If you have any concern then skip it and go to the next one is how I would approach it.

One time in iowa I asked a guy to hunt a buffer strip in his back 40 and he told me to pound sand.

The ice in my Old Fashions while I was in central South Dakota, East River was fresh, good and solid.

Always take Goose's cousin with you. He's good at getting permission.
