I was lucky enough to be able to take most of last week off and back to my old stomping grounds to hunt. My hunting buddy was off too so we were able to go out Wed to Friday. I took Oxford along, he is 15 weeks old. I was planning on just letting him out when we would get back to the truck so he could get a little exercise and get to know his future hunting partners. In the first field we bagged a rooster. So when we headed back to the truck we put the GSPs in the truck and then tossed the rooster in some tall grass, and let Oxford out of the truck. He ran about 15 yards down wind of it, stopped, turned on a dime and headed right to it. Made me feel like a proud Papa! Then while he was smelling and exploring the quail my hunting buddy fired a shot about 30 yards away. Oxford had no reaction, so he fired a few more shots, no reaction. This made me very excited since I had gotten rid of a gun shy puppy earlier this year.
When we went to the next field we decided what the heck, he is not afraid of the gun shots, this is light cover, and not a big field lets take him out. He had a blast. We did not find any birds in the field but Ox loved chasing the other dogs around and he certainly is a bold pup in the field.
Day 2 we took him out with us again. Got into a nice covey right away. The shots made him even more excited. He started running on his own, instead of just chasing the 2 GSPs. We hunted up a water way where we found a covey on opening day, we did not come across any birds when we reached the end of the water way we stopped to discuss what to do next. After a 2 minute chat we decided to head back towards the truck. During the conversation Oxford was by another guy, Ben. Ben said Ox seemed like he was on point, not even moving his tail, but he did not think anything of it since he is 15 weeks old. The first step we took back toward the truck, and toward Ox, flushed a hen right in front of him. He took off like a rocket chasing the hen through the air.
So I did not get to see it... But I think Oxford pointed his first bird. A very exciting day to say the least.
