PIERRE, SD - The South Dakota House on Monday passed a bill that would make it a Class 6 felony to kill an on-duty police service dog.

The bill also would make it a Class 1 misdemeanor to intentionally injure torment, strike, disable or tamper with a law enforcement support animal.

Martha Vanderlinde, D-Sioux Falls, says police dogs undergo intense training to serve their communities and should be protected.

The measure excludes an officer or a veterinarian who puts down a police dog to relieve undue suffering and pain. The bill now heads to the Senate.
