Hunting On my mind.

So if the best way to work the dog and the wild birds are hours away, and you can only afford to drive all that way 3 or 4 times a season, what do you do in the time between? Not bird hunt, go to a pay to hunt?

Suffer with as much nobility as you can muster. :p

I lived in NC all my life until 4 years ago. We had birds in the 70's, but the 90's and 2000's were terrible. Would hunt all day and not see a bird. 1500 miles later I am in heaven even if this is a bad year.

Few limits as to what one can do.....other than stooping limits.
Pay to Hunt and/or Pay to Shoot are both options for which the dog would likely care less.
Trials, et al are fine for some as well.

Nearly like the NC fella, I willingly stopped ruffed grouse hunting here when bird contacts reached .75/hour, as hunting is less important than the hunted for me....the Superslab is then one requisite answer.
As I hate to be bored, deerhunting is off that possible "Do" list.
Worse came to worse...I would hunt squirrels behind a Mountain Feist.
