Hunting jacket

Well i'm one those guys that wear what have and don't buy the name brand stuff, but i'm thinking getting 1 nice bird hunting jacket finally. It needs to be tough, cut the wind and fairly light weight. Have pockets for shells, water bottles for the dogs and me and a nice game pouch. Any recomendations?

Go with the Buck's bag strap vest or the wingworks one. Both are exceptional. Jackets get to cumbersome.Wear waht you want under and go with a strap vest.

I love Gore-tex so I am biased that way. Here's why, I got caught in a snow storm nothing major but I got soaked never again. Now what I have found in 1 type of jacket is that the pocket flaps didn't cover the pocket and another jacket had slits no cover over the pockets both filled with rain/snow. So go with gore-tex and watch for those little flaws. Also I use gore-tex pants otherwise the water coming off your jacket soaks your pants and shoes( did I mention gore-tex shoes?). See I told you I am gore-tex.
LL Bean has the best pants I feel. Cabela's is good for jacket but watch the pockets.
Filson stuff is heavy and doesn't breathe for me I would sweat bad.... On the other hand I do need to do more sweating but not while I'm hunting. Hope this helps.
Otherwise if the weather is nice I go with an insulated shirt and a vest. (gore-tex jacket in the truck)...

I got a WingWorks vest last September. Its a strap vest so it may not be what you are looking for, but I love it and wear it exclusively in all weather.

I'm going to have to agree with the strap vest guys on this one. I wear a filson because it wears like iron and it fits the best of all of them I tried on. I use one vest all year long and just put a different coat underneath for the conditions I will be hunting. I dont put much stock into brand name, I would just go to a store and start trying things on to see what will suit your needs the best. Good luck!

Setternut sent his WingWorks vest for me to see at a training seminar. Stellar piece of equipment. For late season wear wool and something that breaks the wind over it. Strap vests over that. Freedom of movement.

I did say thanks for sending it along With J & K, didn't I?

I'm not rich like the boys that wear the WingsWorks ;), but I'll agree with them, strap vest over the top of whatever the weather dictates. Dad and I both have a Cabela's strap vest, chest buckle and waist strap, 2 front shell pockets and game bag in back, blaze orange for safety. We'll wear it over a t-shirt for the hot days, or over a light jacket for cool days, or over heavy Carhartt coats on the cold days, or over the rain gear on wet days.

I've got a cheaper Woolrich 'gamecoat' that works great, for a small window of temperatures.

You sure did. It was my pleasure.
I sure like the WW vest,

WW looks like a nice vest for sure. I might check it out a little closer. I'm wool guy when its cold.. I could always put it over my carhartt jacket.

Not a rich guy here. Just a poor old science teacher in rural MO. Like to put a few dollars aside each month until I can afford what I want!

Understood, we all have our vices, the wife doesn't see how a guy should own so many $200-$300 handmade knives. "You can only use one at a time!!" "yeah, but this is a skinner, this is a boner, this is a filet, this is a general purpose, this is really pretty......." She started it though, she bought me the first one. :)

Back on topic though, from the guys that own them, I've never heard a bad thing about the WingWorks vest.

I own a bird and light strap vest. Love it were it all year long in MN. The only thing they need to improve on is the shell pouches in the front. If they are not closed you will loose shells bending down. Other than that its a great vest. With the adjustable straps I caring 3 birds, water for the dogs and shell is no bid deal. Loading birds in the bag is easy as well.

Zipper Closure Good

Whatever you get I would get one that zips. I had to have a zipper installed on my button-up Cabela's field jacket. With the zipper, it is just fine but brush pulled off buttons.
