Hunting GPS Maps

No, but I've been using a new method while I'm out driving county roads with no cell service and I love it. Colorado DOW is now embedding GPS coordinates into their atlas and WIA maps. Great idea here. I've only tried their Small Game Late Cropland WIA maps so far, but I think they're doing it to all maps. If you have a smartphone, you're good to go. Get a GPS pdf app for your phone, download the maps to your phone and Bam, GPS with preloaded maps on your phone with no cell service required.

There are a couple ways to get the Colorado DOW maps to your Android or iPhone smartphone. 1) download them to your computer and transfer them to your smartphone by whatever way to prefer(sync, email, bluetooth, etc) 2) visit the Colorado DOW website from your smartphone and download them directly 3) Or open the Avenza App, below, and direct Avenza to the files . You can download all the maps or just the counties you'll be hunting. Some counties have two maps you'll need to download (eg Yuma North and Yuma South)

Then go get an app. There are a bunch of apps that read GPS from PDF files, the best one I've found is Avenza PDF Maps. This App is incredible, more on that in a bit. Install the App, run it and now you will need to move the downloaded PDF Maps into Avenza. If you hit the "+" symbol in the top right corner, you can direct Avenza to the files on your SD card(phone) or a dropbox or straight from a website, slick huh?

Make sure your phone's GPS is on!!!!

So let's say you're in the town of Holyoke, planning where you're going to go for the day. Open Avenza, open the Phillips County map and hit the arrow symbol, this will locate exactly where you are on that Phillips County map. You should see a blue dot in the town of Holyoke, as you move or drive around, that dot will move on the map with you. You must be on that map for the blue dot to show up, you can't be in Denver and open the Phillips county map, it will tell you you're off the map.

My favorite part about this - if you find a field you like, or bag a bird, or want to remember a field for next year, move the cross hairs to the field you're at and hit the pushpin logo. You can add notes about that field!

Avenza also provides a handy getting started map with some good pointers.

I love this system and am not about to go out and by a gps or pay for maps. Just thought I would share it. If you have any questions, let me know.

Used them for the first time this year big game hunting! Do not know why I waited so freaking long to buy!!! I personally cannot say anything but good things!!:thumbsup:
 
adrnln8: the thing that makes it especially attractive to me is the ability to see all types of state controlled/offered properties and their boundaries. Thanks for the detailed instruction on converting the DOW supplied maps though. A very thorough explanation and much appreciated!

Dang it! I tried this and it is giving me an error message something like: "Georeferencing cannot be done on this map as coordinates are required....How do you do just one page at a time?
 
AHHH! Thanks, I'll try those later, I was downloading the entire booklet:eek:
