My son is back for Xmas so we went hunting this afternoon and plan on doing all week. Very foggy out this afternoon and no sun to melt frost off the grass. We got soaked but did manage a bird each. He was happy to get out and glad he connected on his 1 chance.
First place we hunted is private ground but someone hunted it this morning. I got 1 there and missed 1. Saw about a dozen hens and 1 other rooster. Normally we would have limited out hunting there.
We made a 20 minute drive to another piece of private and had 20 minutes to hunt. I gave him a quick rundown on the lay of the land and we were greeted by 30 or so birds flushing as we parked. We saw another 40 flush out of the heavier cover as we got started. He got his bird at the far property line. Dropped it dead and Willie retrieved it for us.
I haven't carried my old 870 all year and I was thinking about the time we hunted in similar conditions and I got enough frost on my slide action that it froze up solid. Today I kept cleaning the frost off it.
