It has been a good year for huns, typically I flush at least one covey hiking into my cattail rooster spots.
Pretty bird. The wing and side feathers are popular for fly tying patterns.
Bigger than quail, smaller than chuckars/grouse. Coveys can be as large as 20-30, but usually about 8-12.
They usually call when flushing and are easy to hit when I focus a single shot on a single bird.

Bucket list bird. Have seen them while antelope hunting in Wyoming. Need to make a dedicated trip with them as the target.

When numbers are elevated, very successful days are possible. But when numbers are few, flushes can be hard to find. They need mild winters without deep snow and dry nesting conditions. Sharpies are more weather tolerant as they feed on buds and not just grains during the winter. Many flocks are dependent on wind breaks around prairie farms to survive harsh winter weather. I have chased them every year except two since 1986. Tough quick little birds are my favorite and will be yours also. 20ga. I/C Mod 1300fps 7/8oz Get hooked
